update: Leaked on 12/2

It's been a while since our last England shirt update, but the biggest news is that the new England shirt is expected to retail at around £50.

The marketing campaign will soon kick in, and its aim to point out that the new shirt is a top quality product and superior to the current model which can now be bought for a few quid in most online and discount stores.

It’s understood that the England squad have already seen the new shirt and have been pictured in them too. However, they have been instructed not to leak any details of its appearance to friends, family and in particular, the media.

However we can be certain of one feature of the shirt – it’s been agreed that the nike swoosh will not replace the existing Umbro logo.

The England shirts will be available on pre-order during March and purchasers should receive them on 1st April, the day England are at home to Ukraine in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.

The RRP has gone up by £10 to £50.

England fan John Jackson, 57, from Salford, raged: "It’s a con.

"How can they justify whacking the price up by a quarter when everyone’s feeling the pinch?"

A spokesman for Umbro said the recommended retail price was £50.

But he added: "It will be up to individual retailers how much they sell it at."

An FA spokesman said: "We have a long-term relationship with Umbro. But when it comes to any RRP we have absolutely no control. It’s just not down to us."

England fan John Jackson, 57, from Salford: Don\'t buy it then, no-one is forcing you too.

Appropriate they\'ll play in it the first time on the 1st of April, because £50 is a complete JOKE. Don\'t expect this one to be a big seller until the World Cup finals roll around.

Fortunately for those of us in the States, the exchange rates mean that a 10 pound price increase won\'t affect us. When shirts were 40 pounds, we had to pay $80 but now this shirt is 50 pounds but we\'ll only have to pay $70 minus VAT.

£50.00 for a football shirt for any nationality is a joke, typical Nike though, stick with Adidias, far better quality anyway....laughing Jock!

For us in new zealand it\'l be about 60 pounds or 70 if we want names and numbers on the back cos we have to pay shipping

I\'m pretty sure the england thing will be in the middle like the away kit
I\'d just buy the away kit

and now I know why the current ones were only 10 pounds

Back in the 80s and early 90s Umbro were by far and away the best kit manufacturer, and they had a massive portfolio of clubs. At one time or another they made the kit for most of the top flight sides and in their heyday they had some innovative and exciting kit designs.

But then they threw all of their eggs in one basket and it backfired, they ditched sides as soon as they became unfashionable or got relegated (except Forest, because I think their CEO is a fan), they concentrated on just the big sides and let a lot of others fall by the wayside. Then when they lost their bigger shirt deals (Brazil, Man Utd) they had problems.

I think that Umbro are concerned about how people view the brand. They\'ve started to up their game again and get more clubs on board but for the last few years they have been synonymous with the cheaper end of the market. You can buy Umbro training wear for next to nothing in Sports Direct and it\'s become downmarket and chavvy.

Maybe their think that buy making the shirts a bit more expensive, they can shake off this tag and start to reposition the brand towards the \'quality\' end of the market.

They got squeezed out of the market by Nike, adidas and Puma to some extent. Umbro lost Manchester United to Nike because there was no way they could match what Nike offered the club. Nike as a company is way bigger, with more resources and cash. It was only a matter of time. Also, I\'ve heard the price is going up because there is a separate compression layer.

They are only £50 because Umbro know that muppets will continue to buy them particularly as it is very likely we will qualify for the world cup now that we have a decent manager. People should stop moaning and vote with their wallets !

This seems to be a very strange piece of marketing.
If you are going to bang up the shirt price to, a staggering, £50 then surely it is better to release pictures of the most popular players in the shirts, rave about the quality, get all jingoistic about \'in-ger-land\' and then hit people with the extortionate price.
In a way Roginho is right, it is because they know that people will buy it anyway. My advice is don\'t and after a couple of weeks they will be forced to drop the price.

Isn\'t Umbro owned by Nike now anyways. Maybe they can share some of there ideas. I hate adidas kits, boring and have not changed the styles in years. For 50 pounds this must be one hell of a shirt.

Well, it sure looks as fake as it can be... I honestly hope England don\'t wear this EVER.

But, dig this: the QR code in the bottom left-hand side zoomed picture bears the following website link: http://umbrogr.umbro.com/

this detail is somewhat suspicious, don\'t you think?
