arsenal 70-71 kit

Arsenalinsider revealed that Arsenal will revert to a design based on their 1971 Double-winning kit for next 10/11 season to celebrate the Gunners' 125th anniversary.

Nike and the club are said to have agreed on a design based on the traditional red shirts with white sleeves much to the relief of supporters who had feared the club were set to abandon the white sleeves altogether.

It was thought they were set to produce an all-red shirt similar to those donated to the Gunners by Nottingham Forest in 1886.

The site also exclusively revealed that the away kit returns to a theme of yellow.

Fans seem delighted that the club have produced a kit with such historical importance. 'That simple red and white kit is iconic with the Arsenal and will sell like hot cakes,' said season-ticket holder Chris Adsett, 36.

'We've had many variations on the home shirt but the essence of all things Arsenal can be found in the '71 home top and we can only hope some of the success of that era returns to us next season.'

Likewise haha
So far, hearing that they are going to base their design on the very awsome 1971 kit, brings me hope for a triumphant return of the good old white sleeves. This news puts a smile on my face :)

Well said funster. The last 6 years of Arsenal kits have been an absolute joke. White sleeves should be the law for Arsenal. However knowing nike it will be exactly the same as the villa design ...which is cheap and nasty looking anyway !

What was wrong with the shirt in between the current one and the Highbury one? I have it, and it's a red shirt with all white sleeves. Theres a great (really comfortable) collar, some gold trim on the sides of the body, and a bit of red on the end of the sleeves. Sounds like a top notch Arsenal shirt to me.

This is a great idea, the old kits are always the best. I actually wear a replica retro '71 shirt instead of the current nike kit. The current kit is awful, all white sleeves please! Great to see away kit go back to yellow as well. I've got a theory that were more likely to win things when our away kit is yellow. Hopefully the keeper kit will be green as well, instead of messing about with yellow and grey (eugh)

It would be even better if Arsenal can get Nike to do what Errea did for Burnley this year and put their logo on the sleeve and not on the chest, so that it looks even more like the iconic '71 kit.

What do you mean on the sleeves?

Don't get me wrong, because I'm glad to see the direction of the new strips, but it was only one kit that wasn't fully white sleeves.

Surely no one is including the Highbury kit as evidence that the club was going to, "abandon the white sleeves altogether." For Christ's sake, there was a legitimate historical purpose for doing that, just as there would have been to do an all red shirt for the 125th anniversary.

Again, I like the nod to the 1970-71 side, but people got way too up in arms about the last kit with the white stripe on the sleeves. All Nike were trying to do was reinterpret a classic design.

Manufacturers just can't get a fair break. If they stick to the classics, then they are called boring or accused of selling the same old shirt year after year. If they try to get creative they are accused of destroying the history of the club or putting unnecessary frills on the kit. They just can't win.

Thats not strictly true as every Arsenal shirt prior to this disgusting joke of an effort had white sleeves ( excluding the nonsense Highbury cranberry abomination). Look at the old Adidas and umbro kits even the earlier nike ones were ok and kept to the theme. Nike are simply tired and desperate when it comes to kit ideas and will simply repackage an old design as a return to the good old days. I really don't get why people buy into the nike thing I think they are awful. Umbro have been ok this year Adidas and Puma rubbish nike dire . Time to give some of the smaller more innovative companies an opportunity! Man utd can move to Vandanel Arsenal Bukta Liverpool Prostar Chelsea Carbrini

You're a dolt.

The point I was making, which you were obviously too daft to follow, was that Nike made two kits without fully white sleeves in their 15 years worth of designing strips for the club.

The Highbury sendoff kit was part of a celebration of the club's history and the 93 years they spent at Highbury, so whether you like it or not, there was an undisputed reason for doing that kit that way.

That leaves only the current kit, 1 out of the 10 that Nike designed for Nike, as the only kit that wasn't completely white on the sleeves (aside from a bit of trim or what have you). I just don't get all of the gnashing of teeth about it.

What are they supposed to do, keep making the same kit for 15 years? I don't think you'd be happy even then, you knob. One minute you're having a go at Nike for messing with, "the theme," and then the next minute you're talking about how the big clubs should give the, "smaller more innovative companies an opporunity."

Seriously, what do you want, consistency or innovation? Moron.

I completely agree with you about people wanting things both ways (or neither for that matter), but I just wanted to offer a point of clarification:

Nike's first Arsenal shirts had red on the sleeves not entirely unlike the current one, and their shirts from the 04-05 season had a swath of red down the sleeves, about the same amount as there is white on Arsenal's current home shirt.

I wouldn't have minded them giving a nod to their distant past, as I think the photoshopped "leaked" pics looked pretty smart (I love the current away and third shirts), but I also love the classic '60s & '70s look.

Having said all this, I DON'T think the "poor" shirt manufacturers "can't catch a break" - they're multinational exploitative endeavors in their basest form. Now I'll give them my money and feel ashamed about it.

Surely you're correct in saying that the multinational corporations don't deserve our pity from an economic sense.

I was only speaking from an artistic/creative standpoint, in which, I think, it is obvious from the above, they have a false choice between innovation/creativity and consistency/respect for a club's history. They have two (mostly) mutually exclusive camps that they must alternate in pleasing.

That's why something like the Tailored by Umbro range is so groundbreaking and refreshing. They're managing to do "retro" in a way that feels innovative in the same way. Much props to Umbro and their parent Nike for pulling something like that off.

JVC kit was not full sleeves either you prick........I think you take things a little too seriously......Obvioulsy you haven't grown up yet and learnt about irony. If you seriously think that I meant Arsenal could use Bukta then its time you came out of your stinking little bedroom and stopped playing with yourself and woke up to the real world. The only reason clubs use Nike and Adidas and to a lesser extent Puma and Umbro is the fact they are paid huge amounts of money to do so. It certainly isn't for innovative designs.Having paid huge sums the manufacturer has to recoup its money by designing something which is cheap to manufacture and easy to sell at top dollar due to compete bullshit marketing speak which average joe mug falls for . The fact is the material is shit and the kit is made in cheap factories in the far east. It is possible for companies to innovate they are just censoreding lazy arrogent and complacent.

Good news that the 70-71 team will be the inspiration. I like the present Arsenal badge. I think the Cannon Logo would look fantastic on the shorts!

If Nike nails this kit....it will be a world record sellout...

I suspect Nike changed the sleeves last time so they could change them back this time.

If they kept the same style every year then people would moan about lazy designs.

Maybe they will finally win a trophy in this kit, it will be six years since the FA Cup win in 2005 when we get to the back end of next season

To be honest - there isn't a lot you can do with a shirt of such historical importance as the Arsenal. If you revert to a traditional red with white sleeves, people say it's boring, yet if Nike decide to be adventurous and bold and design something which doesn't follow tradiotion, people say that its crap and "not an Arsenal shirt".

They are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
