Manchester City 2011/12 Umbro Away Kit

This is the new Manchester City away kit for the 2011/2012 English Premier League season manufactured by Umbro.

The kit was revealed at Monday night’s FA Cup homecoming event at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The inspiration for the Umbro kit is taken from the most famous shirt in the club’s history – the black and red shirt worn in 1969 and 1970 during which time City won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup.

To achieve the ‘tailored’ look for the 2011/2012 away shirt, the Umbro kit designers draped black and red fabric over the silhouette of the modern day ‘arms out’ goal celebration.

The shirt is designed so that when a player celebrates a goal or links arms with team mates, the black and red stripe remains consistent. For this reason, there is no seam on the underarm as traditionally stitching can distort the shape and flow of a stripe. The stripe width on the shirt was inspired by the old 1969 kit. The long sleeve version features an all-black forearm so that there is a unified stripe-look when the players link arms in goal celebrations.

The club crest and sponsor detail is key-lined in gold in order to give standout against the black and red.

This reminds me of a kit of last year or two years ago. It was a blue kit (don't remember which team it was) and someone came out with "Seems like Chelsea".

However, it's not AC MIlan, it's U.S. Foggia.... uhm no, it's OGC Nice.....no, it remebers me Bayer Leverkusen old kit....or was it Freiburg? No, it's definitely New York Metrostars

No. Actually that's a fallacy. City have played in red and black since they were founded in 1890 under a different name. Then in 1894 they became Manchester City and still used red in some of their shirts. And just as much as City has used red and black, United have used blue as and away strip for many many years. All this BS of wearing the rival color has come about in the last couple of decades. Back in the early days it made sense if your shirt was blue to wear red as an away shirt because it was considered the opposite. People need to research before they speak.

You're an idiot. Man U is Red and Yellow. Sure they might wear Black shorts once in a while but so does Argentina and Black isn't one of their kit colours. Besides City has this style in their History and in their Blood. It's a Brilliant Away kit and City will still have the Sky Blue for their Home. No matter what colour you put us in City will always look brilliant on the pitch.

i would like it for any team but Man City. They claim it is inspired by ' the black and red shirt worn in 1969 and 1970 during which time City won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup' but I reckon it is just to piss off united.

I am expecting that the keeper kit is to go with home strip as it surely can't be worn with it?

Why would red and black stripes piss off United? When have they ever wore them?

This is a classic away shirt and has been worn plenty of times down the years. Glad to see it back.

Man United arn't ashamed to wear blue are they. Also Man City fans stop living in the past nobody cares what kit your rivals have worn. It's pathetic that you think that red and black should never be worn by City yet the fact is in your history you have worn them colours in your history. It clearly proves alot of Man City fans jumped aboard when you were taken over.

Think Umbro have done fantastically here, I'll be buying this one. Not bought a red and black away kit for a fair few years. Like the way they've done it as well; simple and classy, as has been the case with all of our Umbro kits. It appears that our away kit from 10/11 (the navy blue one) has been shifted to 3rd kit while the white one with red and black sash from our first Umbro season has been ditched. Now to wait and see what the home kit's like, hopefully it's as classy as this one.

This is a fantastic kit, the collar looks great, the hoops on the shirt are really nice. This is a high quality piece of kit. I like the "cape" effect the collar and shoulder panels give. And to the guy who said this style would make a great newcastle kit - you are nearly right. Remove the stripes off the sleeves to make them all white, and this style would be a great kit for newcastle. Or any team in stripes.

And to those complaining about the red and black, Man City have had these away colours many times in their history. This is Man City Through and Through.

I think Umbro have over-thought this one. The collar/yoke look terrible and the guff about arms out celebrations just gives rise to a slightly odd looking shirt. Umbro should have done the red and black stripes in the same simple template as City's 2009/10 home shirt. Like the socks though. 6/10.

For later-day bandwagon City and United fans alike, these colours have been worn by City since 1968/69. I'm reliably informed that City's early away kits were solid red, too. Red is as much a traditional City colour as blue is to United. Lots of history in those choices.

I agree with you Tim. I appreciate the stylistic thinking behind the arms, but it simply doesn't look very good. And the longsleeves looks terrible.

Like the gold Umbro logo, but am I alone in thinking that the Eithad logo would look better white?

I suppose every time a blue and black striped kit comes out it must be a copy of Inter?

Before making a fool of yourself look into the history of the kit eh? City wore that in the 60's and was based on the AC Milan kit.
Personally I think it looks quality - so glad we signed up to Umbro who are without doubt producing the smartest kits we've ever had right now.

Anyone with a sense of football history knows that a traditional away kit for Man City is red and black stripes. They have worn it, on and off for years.

That...and the one they are probably about to bin (white with red and black diagonal band) are traditional change shirts and I really wish teams would stick with traditional for away kits as well.

Arsenal should always have the yellow and blue, Man Utd and Liverpool white with black shirts with maybe a blue 3rd kit for Man Utd and a yellow one for Liverpool and man City as they are.

And even though they only had it for a season, because it is so associated with them, Coventry should have brown.

Just to clarify:

United's colors are red, white and black. Usually red shirt with white trim, white shorts and black socks.

AC Milan's kits are red and black striped shirts, white socks and black socks.

City have been using red and black striped shirts with black shorts and socks as an away kit since the 1960s and have used it periodically as an away kit since. Last time City used this color combination for an away kit was 2008/09 with the last le coq sportif kits.

And the consensus among City supporters is overwhelmingly positive. Sure there are some qualms about the neck and the hooped sleeves, but overall most fans are happy with the kit, especially considering the passing away of Neil Young (whose bout with cancer inspired the black and red scarves campaign) and Malcolm Allison (who came up with the idea to use this kit in the first place).

So much stupidity here, if you don't know the history behind the kits then don't make ignorant comments.

Finally, football clubs have been nicking kit colors off other clubs for years, Leeds did it in the 60s by going all white, copying Real Madrid, Juventus got their black and white kits off Notts County, Arsenal from Nottingham Forest, etc etc etc

and the people slating City for a red and back away kit need to brush up on their history...

City have had loads of red/black away kits throughout their time.

Quoting Man Utd Kings of Europe 2011:
Man City is a hopeless team. They will never reach the level of Manchester United. Man City = plastic fans and plastic team.

How did that "Man Utd Kings of Europe 2011" turn out. Talking about "turning out", what also happened to around only 5000 people for 19 Parade on a Bank Holiday when everyone was off?
..........................

As for the kit. I really like it, not keen on the neck, though that is a minor thing I don't like which I will soon overlook.

Do these people talking about red & black = man u, etc know anything at all about football?

Anyway, good looking shirt apart from the hoops rather than stripes on the sleeves. Designing shirts for goal celebrations?
Good grief. Presumably you'll need to walk around with your arms out all the time.

City have red & black since late 60's for a total of about 20 years since then. It's not exactly news! And YES, well done, it is remarkably like AC Milan. Your powers of deduction are too grand for this world, go, go forth and be crowned king of the great sovereign nation of Stating the Fecking Obvious.

I'm kind of liking this shirt. Could do without the usual Umbro guff though. Linking arms? Give me a break! And the bit that says, "Don't worry, there's more black than red". Like we're all so parochial that we won't wear red for fear it'll taint us with United?

Nice kit though, not sure about the collar.
