Canada 2012 Centenary Umbro Football Shirt

canada centenary umbro football shirt

On 3 June, the Men's National Team will begin its 2012 home season with a Centennial match against cross-border rivals USA at BMO Field in Toronto. This match will commemorate the first official match that Canada played on home soil when they defeated the Americans 1-0 on 27 June, 1925 at Alexandra Park in Montreal.

WATCH THE UMBRO " BACK IN BLUE" VIDEO HERE

To mark the occasion, Canada will wear a Centennial kit specially designed by Umbro. The Women's National Team will also wear the Centennial kit on 30 June when they meet the USA at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Limited quantities of the Centennial jersey and anthem jacket are both available for sale at canadasoccer.com along with a special edition Centennial cap from New Era.

The shirt, in royal blue with a white collar and eye-catching red maple leaf crest, has been tailored by Umbro to celebrate this important anniversary in the CSA’s history. The shirt, and the accompanying Anthem jacket also crafted by Umbro, will be seen on the field as Canada recreates that iconic first game with a friendly against the United States on June 3rd in Toronto. We’re sure they’d be happy with the same scoreline as that first match 100 years ago as well! The game is the final warm-up before both Canada and the USA resume their World Cup qualification games, so it’s sure to be an important fixture for both teams.

"The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to celebrate its past, present and future as we continue our year-long tribute to 100 years of the beautiful game in this country," stated Victor Montagliani, newly elected President of the Canadian Soccer Association. He added that "We look forward to having Canadian players, coaches, administrators and fans from the grassroots through to our National Teams join in the celebration. We commend Umbro and their historically relevant Centennial kit that is an important part of our sport's history in this country."

The Rangers kit didn't have those white bands round the sleeves. It's also a darker shade of blue too.

Our last set of red and whites were so nice. (We Canadians don't get nice kits that often!) I'm not against this strip, but it will definitely take some getting used to. Any idea what colour shorts we'll wear with it?

So this is a commemorative "centennial shirt", yet Canada didn't actually play their first football match until...1925?!?

I'm no mathemetician, but wouldn't 100 years ago be 1912?
Umbro are getting a bit eager to rush out their special editions.

I'm Canadian and anyone who's also a Canadian footy/soccer fan knows how stupid and f***'d up the CSA is in its football affairs but I never realized they were this stupid from Day 1 our national team original wear blue???? WTF WERE THEY THINKIN??? by itself its a nice classy kit, but the Canadian maple leaf on (what can be considered "American") blue is like the England 3 lions on ("Irish") green, they just don't mix!

That makes no sense when 1- the US team has barely worn that shade of blue in 20 yrs. Only the Copa America 2007 away. We normally wear navy blue, which is 2- the same color on our flag.

So how is this shade of blue American?? This is QUEBEC blue. Own your colors!!

Why Quebec blue? The rest of Canada doesn't even speak French nor do we even acknowledge Quebec and we certainly wish they'd censored off out of Canada.

Canada played the first international match away from British soil. we've been around for ages, but Hockey captured the imagination of our people more than football, likely because the British league season would be impossible to complete during our winter climate.

Horrific top, just like the last few home kits produced by Umbro. It doesnt even look like a Maple Leaf. Maybe if Judas like Owen Hargreave, Amir Begovic and Junior Hoilett played for Canada we would be competing with other CONCACAF teams. To all you Americans bashing Canada, did you know it is legal to marry your cousin in at least 15 states :)

I appreciate that this kit in a comemorative kit, but is anyone else sick of Umbro's retro throwbacks? They were nice to begin with as they were different to the likes of Adidas and Nike, but they have run their course now and just seem to smack of lack of imagination! In 30 years time, will we see retro "retro" jerseys?
