The Portland Timbers and adidas unveiled the team’s official third uniform design for the 2012 season. The retro-inspired jersey is produced from 100 percent recycled materials and was designed and manufactured in Portland.

Timbers defender David Horst and midfielder Darlington Nagbe revealed the new look during a special unveiling event in the KeyBank Club at JELD-WEN Field on Tuesday morning.

“One of the greatest strengths of the Timbers is the rich history of the club,” said Merritt Paulson, president of the Timbers. “With this third kit, we are paying homage to the teams and players that inspired our city to become Soccer City, USA.”

The third uniform, created by adidas, the official athletic sponsor and product supplier of MLS, features a classic white design with Timbers green and yellow accents, as well as a number of signature design elements inspired by the rich history of the club. The retro-inspired design is highlighted by a green-collared jersey that takes inspiration from historic Timbers kits and pays homage to the long-standing tradition of the Timbers in Portland. A further nod to this rich past, and distinct from the team’s primary and secondary kits, the Timbers’ history-inspired secondary crest is included on the third kit. The uniform is completed with white shorts and socks.

“We created this special uniform to celebrate the City of Portland’s great soccer heritage,” said Antonio Zea, director of soccer for adidas America. “We’re proud to deliver the team and fans a unique piece of Timbers history with this jersey made from 100 percent recycled materials and designed and developed right here in the Rose City.”

The jersey also features unique call-outs to a script Timbers font from the North American Soccer League era of the club and an “Estd. 1975” mark to honor the year of the team’s debut season in the NASL. The inside collar is inscribed “Designed and Manufactured in Portland, OR, USA” and features a recycled symbol.

Further, the club’s official jersey partner, Alaska Airlines, joined in the spirit of the third-kit design. The Alaska Airlines name on the front of the third jersey features a sans serif typeface, identical to the script prominently featured across the carrier’s fuselage in 1979 when the airline started regular jet service in Portland. The retro font was used for decades and preceded the well-known Alaska Airlines wind-script, used by the airline since the early 1990s, that is featured on the Timbers’ primary and secondary shirts.

"With longstanding ties to the Portland community, we're thrilled to further celebrate our Timbers partnership with a jersey that harkens back to the era Alaska first started jet service in Soccer City, USA," said Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing.

The third kit will be worn for select matches during the upcoming season; the Timbers will continue to feature their green primary jerseys and Rose City Red secondary kits in 2012.

Thanks to Ken

Personally I am just glad to see collars return, was getting bored of the round or v-neck designs.

lately Adidas kits have not looked like they're built to perform, but to look retro...awful
I mean does this shirt even look like it was built to play soccer/football in?

This is absolutely brilliant, love that even Alaska Airlines made their logo "retro" so to speak. Really nice, proper retro kit for a club that really does have the history to do it.

That is a font that AA used to have on their planes. Hence, keeping w/the retro vibe.

Because Adidas has an exclusive partnership with MLS. They make the Kits, and the balls.

Portland isn't playing Champion's League, why do they need a 3rd?

I guess if Seattle has one they need one too?

This kit is a perfect retro shirt, going to sell like crazy it has a cosmos feel to it but it does enough to represent the Timbers past. @ Ognox You shouldnt talk having that thing u call a 3rd jersey, pretty bad.

Finally, a touch of class in the MLS.

The Timbers crest looks especially great, as does Helveticaing up the Alaska Airlines logo. Collar's good too.

It doesn't mention the shirts are $175. Nice shirt, but not for $175 in a box with a scarf thrown in.

Only the first 2012 shirts are part of the $175/scarf/box combo. Those shirts are also made in Portland out of 100% recycled materials. The "regular" shirts go on sale in early January and will cost $70.

Nice kit, though I am not sure they need one when they aren't in Champions League. By the way, Portland is not "Soccer City USA". Call me when you guys can average almost 40K per game...

Nice attempt from Adidas. Am liking the attempt to tone things down and make it more retro - the club crest is wonderful and the sponsors, for once, don't ruin but compliment the jersey. I just think it would be great if they could go all the way with the retro thing - using the latest materials and manufacturing technology, but make the look more retro by replacing the modern adidas logo with the adidas originals 3-leaf logo.

Fantastic kit for the Timbers!!! Their amazing fans deserve it. And this proves that Adidas really can go retro and make it work great. I don't care if the price is a bit steep for the supporters 'package with the scarf... i'm buying it! roll on the Timbers' army for 2012!

Lovely kit! The replica's will be going on sale in January for $70, I might get one of those if it's not too expensive to get it shipped here.

Well since Portland will play at least one game for the USOC and will likely play a friendly or two there are reasons to have a third kit. I seem to remember Seattle wearing their third when ManU destroyed them last summer.

Way to milk the kitmarket, guys. They only need a change kit for games away to Seattle, so a third kit is completely rudimentary.

Beautiful kit. The only thing that would've made it better is if adidas joined in the whole "retro" thing and put the Originals logo on it!

I've heard there's no chance of adidas using the originals trefoil for any teamwear. Politics between originals and the soccer departments.

It's indeed a nice looking shirt, and that's coming from a die hard Sounders fan.

Alas, a shirt alone won't make them better on the field, and they'll still fall short when it comes to taking on their rivals from Seattle.

Just sayin'... 3-2 at home... Ouch.
