Southampton 12/13 Umbro Home & Away Football Shirts

Southampton have unveiled their new Umbro home and away kits for the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season.

The club goes marching on with two fresh designs that are set to make an impact with Saints in the top-flight in the forthcoming campaign.

The predominantly red home strip is complemented by a white away kit that sets itself apart from recent designs to embrace the new era of Premier League football for the club.

The all new away kit will be on sale in store and online from Saturday 14th July on the day of the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup.

don't get me wrong, I know this is the reason for Cardiff's "rebrand" ... but I highly doubt asians would just support the sh*t out of a club, only because it's selling red shirts. I mean... what?

to me this allways seems like 'changing stuff for the sake of changing stuff'.

To be fair a lot of Asian fans support Man Utd , this could be due to their success and the mass coverage of the Premier League over there or it could be down to the fact that they wear red.

Foreign supporters will tend to adopt a team who happen to be dominating at the time. Man U were winning everything when the Prem spread in to China, so its pretty straight forward to see why they would gain so many Chinese fans.

The downside of this is that clubs now care more about the billions (or potential billions) they could market their club to rather than all those who have been supporting and going to games for years - Cardiff have sold thier souls whilst Man U have been one of the worst for blocking players joining up with the England squad ...... only to take them on a mini tour of China shortly after.

I am a Saints fan but hate this! They departed from the stripes two seasons ago but that was for the anniversary strip, whch was excellent, This is shite. It's not even a great red shirt or great white shirt. Saints play in red and white stripes. End of.

I agree to some extent it is wrong to lose their heritage, but sometimes a radical rebrand through kit design brings a new identity.

For instance Leeds did not wear white till the 60's, fans at the time probably thought it would be weird and losing history. But now Leeds not in white is unimaginable!

Southampton have played in many different combos of red and white, so not playing in red and white stripes with black shorts can be explained and justified.

Having said that, I think that this is a step too far. Personally, the 125 years shirt was brilliant, and it would have been cool to see the saints in something like that. These kits are quality, as usual for umbro, but don't really suit the saints. They look more suited to Forest to be honest, with the pinstripes.

Good kit for some club, but not ours. We flirted with no stripes in the mid 80s then the odd half kits of Hummel later, but we are a red and white striped team. The sash kit was different, but it was an awesome kit showing heritage. This disgrace merely has a Nottingham forest and Liverpool heritage. Hopefully common sense will come,into play next season- ideally with a return to the early 80s Patrick kit!!!

as a pompey fan I don't mean this as a piss take but they are two great strips.Yes,it's not a traditional Saints kit but as say Bradford City or Sheff Weds or United know,there's only so much you can do with stripes.As a kit design I loved Hummels half and half design (like Denmark had).

True. There is so much you can do with stripes - you can make them narrower, wider, add a third colour as pinstripes, put pinstripes in the middle of the main stripes, remove the stripes from the sleeves, make the stripes on the sleeves the same orientation as the ones on the shirt (A la Man City change), add a yoke to the shirt, vary how far the stripes continue up or down the shirt, make the collar and/or cuffs contrast, use paint effects on the stripes, use different shades of colour on the stripes, make the stripes wavy (USA Change kit for 1994), just off the top of my head.

So, not much you can do with stripes then

Nice kits but for the wrong team. Southamptons red and white stripes are iconic so to get rid of those is a ludicrous move. The only time they did get away with doing that is with that classic 'sash' kit a couple of seasons ago but that was based on 1 of their first ever strips

What a ridiculous reason to change a club's kit away from it's traditions, you don't throw away your club's identity to celebrate a promotion (or for the sort of marketing nonsense this so obviously really is). Dreadful, really dreadful., I'm no Southampton fan but this has really annoyed me.

As a Pompey fan, I remember seeing the centenary shirt from a couple of years back with the sash and thinking "Damn I've got to admit that's good." Then I was pretty overwhelmed by the return of the stripes in the Championship a year later. A home kit all in red however is a bridge too far. I think it would be fine if they used that white away kit for the home shirt, but the red just doesn't feel like Southampton to me.

I like these kits. The last 3 seasons we have had some really good kits. The fact that they are different each year makes it interesting. We are known for our bigger stripes but at least umbro are making an effort unlike other kit makers where they hash out the same design every year. Well done for the marketing department as well for having an imagination with the promotional posters. There's only so many kit launches you can handle with fake cheering from the players.

As a saints fan this kit makes me feel nothing but disappointed, always hated the plain kits of Liverpool and now we've got one of our own, very sad to see the stripes go. can't believe anyone at the club or umbel would think this is good for the club. HATE IT.

As much as the kits look nice, Southampton is a red and white striped club for me. All red just seems wrong. Maybe the designers are from the Isle of Wight. Local. Very poor and I feel for the fans, especially after what they have gone through the past few years. They must have been so happy to play back in the Prem and now they look like Liverpool. Not good. I think I will call Boris Johnson.

I'd definitely prefer to see Southampton stick with their traditional stripes but, as others have said, they've departed from them previously.

What's with the all red thing, though? Surely they should at least be in black shorts. In fact, the away shirt and black shorts could have been a decent home strip.

Southampton isn't Wigan (where a different look for every season is deemed OK). Southampton has an iconic look (with stripes) and changing it upon re-entering the Premier League is a really poor idea.

Do they think that simply because the way the trail of players in the poster make it look like red and white stripes that anyone would buy the notion that these are somehow remotely representative of Southampton?

If they were going to abandon the stripes they could have gone for the one they had a couple of years ago to celebrate their anniversary or indeed harked back to the Kevin Keegan kit.

If I was a Southampton fan, I would be very disappointed.

I am a saints fan and am GUTTED that they have created these. The design is boring the stripes are non existent, the fit of the shirt is baggy and awful. I cannot believe that as a mark of our return to the top flight of football they hand out this crap looking like cheltenham town or rotheram etc etc

Having said that, I think that this is a step too far. Personally, the 125 years shirt was brilliant, and it would have been cool to see the saints in something like that. These kits are quality, as usual for umbro, but don't really suit the saints. They look more suited to Forest to be honest, with the pinstripes.
I think think this will also be the next forest kits bets anyone.

The template is similar to what Ireland played in the Euros with the collar from Man City's kit from last year. Not Southampton kits & not nice kits just a poor rehash of previous umbro designs. I like Cortese but he really dropped a bollock on this.

Prefer to see Southampton in stripes but that said this is a good looking kit. For me Saints will always be the Patrick kit of the 80-'s.
Safe design but sometimes that is a good thing. Another winner from Umbro who have been very impressive this year

The kit looks good on aesthetics, i can understand why people would be annoyed but it's not the end of the world we departed from the traditional stripes for no reason in particular, it doesn't matter what it looks like at the end of the day - fans shouldn't criticize against their own club for trying something different especially when it comes down to it the true fans will still attend and watch matches and probably buy the kit, all I care about is that we have a good first season back in the premier league. we haven't lost any heritage or tradition and i no doubt we'll see stripes back next season.
