Last summer the fans were asked to give their views on three proposed designs for a new 3rd kit to celebrate the Club’s 135th anniversary this year.
The most popular choice was the scarlet and blue hooped strip based on the first design of strip to be worn by St Mirren Football Club when they started their football story way back in 1877.
This men's official replica long sleeve ST. Mirren third shirt celebrates the 135th anniversary of the club for the 2012/13 Scottish Premier League season, from Diadora the shirt features and open collar with gold detail, all over blue and red striped detail plus Diadora branding in white placed on the sleeves, chest and across the mid. To complete this shirt a high build team crest sits proudly on the chest. Available to pre-order now, this shirt is expected to launch the 4th of April 2012.

well, i;m 135 and it feels good so celebrate with me if nothing else!
Unless your really unaware - football teams are going down the pan at an alarming rate. Pompey, Port Vale, Darlington, Plymouth, Hearts, Rangers, and Dunfermline have all been in the news at least for cash worries. It's even leaking into Rugby with Bradford Bulls. So perhaps a 'lame' anniversary - but a decent shirt that will only be bought if folk like it - and seemingly they do so well done St.Mirren if it brings in some funds.
But this is just another opportunity to take money off fans.
In an industry where most kits only last for one season - three kits is too many for any club (Man Utd et al).
So if you're going to do it, pick an anniversary that has some impact and meaning to the faithful fans. The sales would be so much higher.
I'm not having it that 135 years is a valid anniversary for a commemorative kit.
I think there's smarter ways to bring some revenue into clubs, without leaving a bad taste in the fans mouths (and wallets!)
Three kits is too much your right. But clubs are now in a 'damned if we do, damned if we don't' scenario. They need cash fast. Fans only have to buy kits if they WANT to. Okay there is sometimes expectation on youngsters to have the latest kits - but parents only have to say 'you can have one of the three'. So St.Mirren want to raise some bucks - they bring out a shirt. No big deal. Look at the likes of Hibs and Celtic - they have green home shirts, bring out green away shirts (they only need away shirts to play each other! Europe aside) - and have to have a third as 'Oh here's a surprise'.....green clashes with green!!
Teams doing such silly things, and teams changing strips when the sponsor and manufacturer haven't changed - are worse culprits that an anniversary release. Though I do have to say 135 is a bit weird
chimp
So the mint green one recently isn't green?
Embarrassed? I would be.
Never mind , next year you will be eligible to buy the 136 anniversary top. There you are , a nice even number for you tulip head. .
St. Mirren are actually one of the most stable clubs in the UK. The have next to nothing debt and recently just got a free stadium due to a big franchise buying the land where their old stadium used to be. And got compensation for it too. It's nice to see a club doing so well and being smart with what little money they have at the same time.
You might be thinking of another Italian brand Fila, who went into receivership before being revived by new South Korean owners.
And if they do, do they really need to put their logo on the sleeve?
Say that to the shirt, it's so awesome it'll slap you in the face.
Umbro chose to use their logo as Celtic's sponsorship deal had fallen through and the shirts had already been printed with a white box.
Here's the story behind this being a 'daft anniversary strip'. We are in year one of a three year deal with JD Sports. The deal was for a home and away kit, and a third kit.
We could have sat back and let JD Sports come up with 'any old design', but we decided to design three options ourselves, and fans who bought the home and away kits voted on which one of the three designs they wanted to become the third kit. The winning design was this one, which is based on our 1877 original jersey of thin scarlet and blue hoops.
We were founded in 1877. In 1977 the team widely regarded to be our greatest ever team, won Division 1 under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson. In 1987, we won the Scottish Cup. So 2012 marks the 135th anniversary of the club, the 35th anniversary of 'Fergie's Furies', and the 25th anniversary of our famous 1987 Scottish Cup win. (Well, famous for us!). So, the years 1877, 1977, and 1987 are significant to us. We wanted to put some commemorative text around the crest, and believe me, the options we came up with were endless. Eventually, it was decided simply to put '135th anniversary 1877-2012, as a 'catch all', and also to utilise the fully-bespoke design service from JD Sports. There's a thought to do this every 5 years from now, making the change kit, or 3rd kit a bit more collectable every 5 years.
There are no 135th anniversary dinners, no firework displays, nothing - just a small bit of embroidered text around this season's retro-look 3rd kit.
My problem is that the marketing and advertising is portraying this as a '135th anniversary celebration kit' - which as can be seen from some of the posts here, has made people (rightfully!) query why a 135th anniversary needs a celebration at all. If the kit was merely marketed as 'the new 3rd kit from St Mirren, based on the 1877 original' - then the text around the crest would perhaps still be queried, but it wouldn't be such a big deal.
My personal view is that it is wrong to trumpet this strip as a big celebration release - I said it would attract questions needlessly, and so it has been proved.
Anyway - them's the facts! The crest text is to mark 1877-1977-1987, to utilise the fully bespoke design service, to make this 'retro-look' kit a bit more collectable, and to do something which we can now repeat every 5 years. Perhaps people will buy the kit and get it signed, frame it, then do it again in 5 years time, when text around the crest will say '140 years'.... and so on.
Everyone knows that a 'celebration' should be for 100, 125, 150... perhaps in hindsight we could have chosen different text, but really, the biggest problem is in people deciding to market it as something it really is not.
Lessons learned for the 140th change kit in 2017!
So JD didn't submit the original designs then based on the history and heritage of St.Mirren, and it was the fans that designed it? mmmm i wonder
It was most certainly a fan who designed the kit (pozbaird who posted above). Indeed, he designed a few options and it was put to a vote on the most popular online St Mirren forums as to which would reach production.
JD Sports designed the current home and away kits in-house. When it came to the third kit design, the club approached them with the idea of fans voting from three club-supplied options. In 2009, we moved to our new stadium after 115 years at our old Love Street ground. Our board talked about having this original hooped shirt to mark the final season at the ground. It didn't happen for two reasons. One, a lack of the bespoke design facility with Hummel to actually do it, and secondly, a board of directors with more important things on their minds - like having two stadiums on the go, and all that entails.
We are now debt-free, established in our new stadium. We have a new Commercial Director, who brokered the JD deal, and can influence, and takes a keen interest in, the kit designs going forward. Much more hands-on, unlike some of the old board. Anyway, I work with him on graphics projects at the club. As a graphic designer and supporter of 36 years standing, it has been a lifetime's ambition of mine to design a St Mirren strip. I suggested re-igniting the 'original hoops' (as one of three choices) for the 3rd kit, and submitted my own designs for the next home and away kits - which have been chosen and will be implemented. No pressure! If people hate them, I'm emigrating to Helmand Province!
The away strip has been shown in drawing form on the club website, and has been well-received. The new home one is under wraps for now. Hopefully, it will receive similar reaction. The design I submitted is something I know a lot of fans have been asking for, for a good while now, after years of Hummel 'bells and whistles' kits - with chevrons, swooshes, panels, off-shoulder stripes, the kitchen sink. Sometimes, less is more. Until the big reveal though... can't say any more.
To sum up though, the kit designs are in reality a team effort. From me, the club's Commercial Director, and JD Sports - who are excellent people, and are happy to chip in with ideas and suggestions, or to run with our suggestions.
Old-fashioned design!
I feel in good.
Thats why they stopped making Scotland's shirts, paving the way for adidas?
Smart kit anyway.
We also had a mint green one that didnt clash last year, and have a 3rd kit this year for no reason.
however these ones are bowfin'
The Skunks in BLUE HOOPS,..gotta love that (in a laugh and point way) .
