Barça To Wear Colours of Catalan Flag

Barça To Wear Colours of Catalan Flag

The FC Barcelona Away shirt in 2013-14 will be in the colours of the Senyera, the flag of the autonomous region of Catalunya (Catalonia) of which Barcelona is the capital.

After the news was leaked yesterday, the club confirmed the move and the shirts are believed to be already in mass production.  There is a great sense of national pride towards the Catalan region within the Barça supporter base so the shirt is likely to be very popular.  Whilst this was always likely, the style had reportedly been previously avoided due to worries over alienating the club's many fans from outside of Catalunya.

Those worries have now been put to one side and the news has been met warmly, with both local politicians and Barça players expressing their joy at the decision, which coincides with the National Day of Catalunya (La Diada).  FC Barcelona is often seen as representing the Catalan nation and the wearing of the flag's colours may solidify this link even further.

The Catalan national side is not officially recognised by Fifa so players rarely have the opportunity to represent their flag, aside from Barça carrying it on the back of the collar over the last few seasons.  In recent years Catalan players have been instrumental in the success of the Spanish national team and their region's contribution has been acknowledged in the media.  Now they will be able to regularly carry their colours in the guise of Barça.

Now call me picky, but the Catalan flag is red and yellow stripes.. not some disgusting orangey colour faded with the yellow. And I can plainly see that without specs.

Maybe you should open a History book. Over 600 years all the southern Italy, including Sicily, were the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; under the Spanish rule, most of the time. So learn a bit, and not only open books... Read them!

the cross on the badge is because of the fact that St. George is the patron saint of Catalonia as well as England

That's saint george's cross. He is the patron of England, Catalonia, the city of Barcelona(the cross is in the city's flag), georgia (search this flag) and a shit load of countries. Don't think it belongs to England.

I've just seen a mock up of the shirt and the logo and sponsor are in white. That must be a wrong. I thought they never had white anywhere on there shirts. It should be blue but if it is it would look like Valencia's away shirt.

Just like Bilbao. There away kit is now in the basque colors.
But if it is so good to represent your region why have they only just thought of it. I thought they should have done it with the home kit years ago and sod what other people think. And I'm not Catalan.

It is part of the City of Barcalona flag as in the link above. And I might be wrong being Spanish (Osasuna Fan) but I thought they wore a kit the same as FC Basle because it was men from that team that started the club. Please don't shout as I say I may be wrong.
And St George (San Jorge) has been the patron saint of Barcelona long before football was invented.

Thankyou N17, the st george is also the saint of milan, which is why inter had a st goerge away kit a few years back, as noted somewhere above, barca tend to avoid white altogether on thier kits, and have not had a white away since the days of cruyff as a player from what i can recall. St george was also the saint of Genoa and Bologna, and im informed that the english adopted the flag so as to have their trade ships protected by the genoan fleet. Although that was from an internet source, hope all that wasnt too boring

Mmmm... not exactly. St. George is not the patron saint of Milan. It's St. Ambrose (Ambrogio in italian, Ambrosio in spanish). The flag of St. Ambrose it's coincidentally a red cross in a white field (as St. George Flag). And this is the reason why Inter wore the shirt yo refer in your comment. And you can see it too in AC Milan crest. But it's for Saint Ambrose, not Saint George.

Spain can beat Catalunya any day. Catalunya doesn't have Casillas, Iniesta or Villa. Puyol and Xavi are over 30, so they wouldn't play long for a possible Catalunya national team.

Valencia have many times before worn an away Catalonia themed shirt. This looks to be Barca's....I think it looks okay but might've been better if they used a blue trim on the collar: http://www.marca.com/2012/09/10/en/football/barcelona/1347308122.html

At the end of the day it reps the flag so if this is indeed their shirt its done its job with a classic look

Valencia C.F. not dress up catalan flag, that's an insult, Valencia saw the Senyera Coronada which is of Comunidad Valencia. In any case wear a variant of the historic crown of Aragon, which is where we come from everyone, including the catalans. They have never been a nation for themselves ...

What a load of shit.

Valencia have been doing this since the 70s, and those stripes represent Aragon and Valencia - 2 groups of people who certainly don't consider themselves Catalan.

This is one for the Barca fan boys in humdrum towns across the world.

Sorry to burst the bubble here regarding that 'leaked' pic from Marca.com - ITS FAKE there is far too much white in the kit and do any (genuine) Barca fans remember 1992 when we had the new Kappa kits take over Meyba? They had the white strip above the shoulders with the Kappa logo in blue repeated inside the strip - There was uproar at the fact there was white in the Kit, too much like Real they said!

im not from barcelona or anything like that (started supporting the team since their champions league win in 2010-11) but i think these colours will not look good, especially if they go with horizontal stripes. barca should always be vertical and blue and red.

i dont even like this years jerseys because they have too little stripes. there should be 7 stripes to match the crest.
