European Cup Winners' Cup - Quarter Final 2nd Leg 1971

Who could ever forget this famous two legged affair when Cardiff City played the mighty Real Madrid over two legs in the European Cup winners Cup Quarter Final.

At the end of the game in Spain, the players exchanged shirts and Don Murray swapped his shirt with the Real Madrid striker Pirri.

The shirt has been signed by the Cardiff City players who took part in this magnificent clash which will remain in the hearts of City supporters forever. Players who signed include Don Murray, Bobby Woodruff, Gary Bell, Dave Carver, Peter King, Brian Clarke, Leighton Phillips, Mel Sutton, Nigel Rees, Ian Gibson and Jim Eadie.

The shirt is mounted and framed and comes with a letter of authenticity from Don Murray himself. It is in good condition for its age having hung in Ninian Park's hall of fame for many years. There is some discolouration evident which you would expect after time. The signatures are very clear and decipherable.

This is a unique, one off piece of sporting memorabilia and an important part of the history of Cardiff City FC.

A football shirt from one of Cardiff City's most famous fixtures has gone on sale.

The white Real Madrid top was signed by all the Bluebirds' players after the club's second game against the Spanish giants in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971.

Cardiff City's former captain Don Murray has now put the shirt up for auction on auction website eBay with a reserve price of £1,500.

City secured a momentous victory at Ninian Park in the first leg but the 1-0 advantage was wiped out by Real's two strikes at the Bernabeu.

'The victory at Ninian Park was a very special moment,' said Murray, 60, the former centre-half linchpin and skipper of that famous team.

'It was a huge match in the history of Cardiff City and I was tremendously proud to captain the side.

'We won the first leg but we knew it was going to be difficult at Madrid.

'Unfortunately, we went down 2-0, but the team was absolutely magnificent.'

After the match, Murray swapped his shirt with Madrid striker Pirri, a potent member of the Spanish side's strikeforce who scored an average of a goal every three European games for the club.

In March this year, a Real Madrid Reunion Dinner was held to mark the 35th anniversary of the Bluebirds' victory with more than 400 guests turning up.

Murray, born in Scotland but who still lives in Cardiff, said it was now the 'right time' to sell the shirt and that whatever he got for it would go towards a nice holiday.

'It's been in my drawer since I had it back from the club,' said Murray.

'For some time it had been on display at Ninian Park in the John Charles Suite.

'I'm officially going to retire this month so it seems like the right time to sell it.

'I'm not sure what the interest will be like in it.

'Perhaps the shirt will attract attention from someone overseas. I would like it to go to someone who has an appreciation of the game — someone who enjoys football. That would be nice.'
