Wembley memories buried E-mail
Wednesday, 27 September 2006

Monday, 05 December 2005.

Yesterday saw a milestone moment in the construction of the new Wembley Stadium as a space-age time capsule - packed full of poignant items - was buried underneath the centre spot
.

Prominent Wembley figures who took part in the ceremony included Tottenham Hotspur and England player Jermain Defoe, FA head of football development Sir Trevor Brooking, stadium architect Lord Norman Foster, four-time Olympian and IOC member Dame Mary Glen Haig plus WNSL chief executive Michael Cunnah.

Defoe said he was honoured to be part of the ceremony: "It's a great privilege for me to be here today and I'm delighted to be able to put in the signed England squad shirt plus a personalised shirt from myself. I'm also placing in a leather-bound book detailing statistics of England football at the stadium.

"The stadium looks absolutely fantastic and I'm honoured to be the first player to walk out onto the pitch - albeit in it's early stages of being laid! I played here as an England schoolboy against Brazil and it was an amazing experience. I hope to play here both for Spurs and England in the future."

The items in the capsule were chosen to reflect the old and new Wembley, the senior England football team, The FA Cup, Football League and Rugby League, the Olympics, music at the stadium and life in England, 2005.

 The list of items included:

Piece of the twin towers and stadium photo
Original signed drawings of the new stadium by Lord Foster
Multiplex constructors hard hat
DVD recordings of the 1966 World Cup Final [signed by Geoff Hurst]
1985's Live Aid concert
125th Anniversary FA Cup Ball
Signed current England shirt
Memorabilia and footage of the 1948 Olympics
Great Britain Rugby League jersey
Football League centenary jug
Number one selling single and album from this week [both Madonna, who played at the old Wembley]
Selection of current English currency

There were also two lucky competition winners - BBC Newsround press packer Alice Matthews and Sun reader Neal Horrocks.

Alice put in a poster of the current fourth Harry Potter movie and the seventh book in the Harry Potter series - she won after suggesting that Live Aid footage should go in the capsule and is the youngest person to have visited the site, normally visitors have to be 18 years-old but a special exception was made in her case.

Neal put in Rolling Stones tickets from a 1999 concert, where he proposed to his fiancé. It was very apt as the same band announced new Wembley dates this weekend - which are now all sold out.
