Wembley : Cotton Legends 2- Liverpool F.A. Cup Final 1989 E-mail

Ian Rush celebrates another FA Cup Final goal with John Barnes.

Extract taken from the just published book : wembley: stadium of legends by Tomsett & Brand, Dewi Lewis Media 2007

The last FA Cup final of the decade was particularly poignant, coming as it did after the semi final disaster at Hillsborough in Sheffield, when many Liverpool fans lost their lives in a crush at the Leppings Lane end.

The city of Liverpool united in grief as Liverpool and Everton contested the final. John Aldridge scored late in the game, only for substitute Stuart McCall to instantly equalise for Everton to force extra time.

Liverpool sent on Ian Rush in extra time and he scored twice, and a second from McCall was not enough to save Everton from losing again to their rivals, 3-2. The fences were down at Wembley in response to what had happened at Hillsborough, and there was a small pitch invasion after the game – an out-pouring of emotion rather than anything else.

A RED LIVERPOOL 1989 F.A.CUP FINAL SHORT-SLEEVED SHIRT No.15, crew-neck collar and embroidered badge, inscribed Liverpool Football Club, F.A.Cup Final, Wembley 1989, the front bearing 15 player autographs including Grobbelaar, Staunton, Whelan, Hansen, Beardsley, Aldridge, Houghton, Barnes, Rush, Venison etc, framed and glazed, 36 x 28½in. (91.5 x 72.4cm) overall. The above shirt is an official 1989 Liverpool F.A.Cup Final shirt. However, we believe it is an unworn substitute's example. In the 1989 F.A.Cup Final played on 20th May 1989 at Wembley, Liverpool defeated their city rivals Everton 3-2 after extra time(not in the book)
