18. Liam Scott,

What\'s the story with the French 3rd shirt? No Adidas branding? I guarantee that shirt wasn\'t on the plane with them when they departed France for Argentina. That was obviously case of s**t lads the home & away kit still clashes with the opposing team. Soloution send the kit man down to the local sports shop to buy 11 shirts that aren\'t whit or blue!!!

17. trish.....,

great kits, pity Rep of Ireland were not there at the time they had a beautiful green jersey with an amazing white trim, they would have looked spectacular at this world cup, only thing was they only able to kick the ball with their left legs and their right legs wouldn\'t work so it made it impossible for them to run they kept going around in circles, no wonder they didn\'t qualify..............

that\'s what i think anyway.

16. Paolo Granda,

I know Italy wore black shorts on one of their games in this world cup. The \'74, \'78, and \'82 world cups were the best in my book and the jerseys worn were the best too

15. Claudio Pasqualetti,

Love the Levi\'s Mexico kit but what does the C mean on the sleeve of the Poland kit?

14. Tom,

Agree with the comments already posted, 1978 world cup was the pinnacle of shirt design, kits nowadays (especially nike ones) are so crap, you would never hear such legendary kit stories such as the France/Kimberley FC one today, I just wish i had been born early enough to have seen this golden age.

13. Eugenio,

Comment #7 is very well informed, France had no third shirt. Those green and white shirts belonged to Kimberley FC, a very small team which plays the Mar del Plata City regional league. The bizarre or scandalous situation (a national team playing a World Cup match with borrowed shirts) had to do with colour clash and TV demands, but it would have been enough if only one of the teams changed to their second white kit. Well, both teams travelled from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata with white shirts and nothing else to replace them, so one of them had to wear the Kimberley FC shirts.
And about TV: nobody had a color TV in Argentina for the 1978 WC. We Argentinians watched all games in B/W, although ATC (the national broadcasting system) broadcasted in color for the first time for the rest of the world. It\'s great to live in the third world.
Well, I just discovered this site, and it\'s great. I really appreciate the football shirt culture of English people. You have always had the best designs. And I\'m very pleased because you put our shirt next to England\'s and Germany\'s. Great rivals, the same passion for football. And as we say here, you don\'t buy brazilian smoke. That\'s a pleasure, believe me. My mail for messages or whatever: .This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Bye

12. ma u,

is it possibal to put the iran shirt

11. Alexandre Pessoa - Rio de Janeir,

Wow, Germany wasn´t sponsored by Adidas in a WC? Amazing!
And the Brazil´s shirt has the Adidas logo in the right side.
Great job!

10. FSC,

Cruyff didn\'t play at the world cup 78 (you\'re probably confused with the 74 WC), but there were some other players at the WC 78 who didn\'t wear the three stripes on their holland kits (see the holland away photo)*For the World Cup of 1974 the Dutch national team were equipped with an Adidas sponsored outfit. The Dutch played with the three stripes on the sleeves, except for Johan Cruyff. Cruyff, who had a personal sponsor deal with Puma, felt not called to play with the three stripes of Adidas. He decided to wear a special manufactured two stripe version. Two of his team members, the Kerkhof brothers (who had also had a personal deal with Puma) followed his example. The two stripe version was produced by Adidas / Erima and worn at the World Cup 74 and 78.(cruyff 74)
Does anyone know more about this subject or adidas at the WC 78?

9. A.Kane,

one note about Holland: Everyone on the team wore the adidas three stripes on the sleeves except for Cruiff, who only had two. must have been a licensing situation.

8. Ajacied,

Realy interesting story. I agree this shirts are so much better than nowadays. Great work Azmi. My favourite mmm I think the Mexico away shirt.

7. professor chimp,
France didn\'t have a third kit. When they played Hungary in the final group match their blue shirts were deemed to clash with Hungary\'s red ones because the vast majority of TV sets in Argentina were black and white. France borrowed the green-and-white shirts from local team Kimberley FC. I agree that designs were never better than 1978 though.

6. Gervillian Swike,
I think I\'ve posted this before, but the World cup kits of 78 were the absolute zenith of football strip design, for me at least. Every single one of the kits above is an absolute cracker, a design classic; with the two Peru strips the absolute top of the pile. Top notch article this.

5. Ben,

The world without Nike is so nice

4. FSC,

Spain and Iran will be there soon. The Polish away kit on the photo has the home shorts to it. Probably because of a colour clash.

3. P#,

photo of a polish player in the away kit appears to have red shorts, and yet the picture has them in white...?

2. hakim,

excellent!! azmi, what about the spain kit? (they were there, rite?)

cheers

1. timfrancis,

levi\'s made the mexico kit ????

Here is the story (in spanish) of \"third kit\" of France... a nice story:
http://arogeraldes.blogspot.com/2007/04/camisetalandia.html
The green and white is the shirt of Mar del Plata\'s club Kimberley.
I will translate this story for english spoken friend.
Best regards from Buenos Aires

Answer to Claudio\'s question about the \"C\"on Poland shirt: This was a symbol of \"Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka\", or \"Children\'s Health Center\". It was a huge hospital for childrens\' diseases that was being built in Poland at that time. The Polish FA asked for a special dispensation from FIFA to be able to carry the hospital\'s symbol on their kits (as means of raising funds, I suppose), and were actually granted that dispensation. This was a big deal in Poland at that time...that\'s why I remember it.

Nicely done--brousing through It seems richer for having all the diffefernt companies rather than noadays where you get two or three variations on an adidas or Nike kit. I\'m amazed that Levis was involved in sports gear

Good trivia question about France\'s third shirt.
They didn\'t have one, but both they and the Hungarians were there at the ground with white shirts and nothing else. So the police searched some Argentinian second division outfit for non-white kits.

One thing that probably isn\'t always remembered about the 1978 WC is that June in the southern hemisphere is the winter.

I don\'t know how cold it is in Argentina in June, but watch some of the archive film of matches and you see the bright late-afternoon winter sun ... and players and managers breath condensation.

One by-product of this was the frequency of long sleeved shirts!

There was no sponsor for Italy?? Levis sponsoring a soccer team? Thats just amazing! The 70\'s is when the finest jerseys wore made... no doubt about it. Im not even gonna mention the classic trefoil...

The Italy kit maker for the 1978 world cup was Erima/adidas.

I'm sure their tracksuits had the three stripes down the sleeves.

I knew that Italy used Le Coq Sportif during 1981-1985. Then Diadora from 1986-1994. Nike from 1995-1999. Kappa from 1999-2002. Puma 2003 till present.

Italy\'s player issue jersey has no brand name on the jersey up until Kappa. But, the first authentic replica for Italy was Erima in 1978. However, I don\'t know whether Italy used Erima in 1978.

Great site. I now produce some of my own kits from overseas for my local soccer team and have always based the shirts on classic ones from the 70\'s. Our latest one is a tight fitting Lycra using a panel V for the neck.

Previous ones are based on a round collar version.

The red one is shown here...

The white one is here...

And we use our own classic footballs...

With reference to \"16. Paolo Granda\". He said: \"I know Italy wore black shorts on one of their games in this world cup.\"

Italy did not wear black shorts in the 1978 World Cup. They wore white shorts in every game apart from the first round match against Hungary, where they wore blue shorts.

I loved the 1978 Italy kit - so simple and so striking. The nearest they\'ve come to recreating them since then are the Kappa kits of the early 2000s.

When Football kits were football kits. Just wish all the Manufacturers would remake them. I always wanted the orange Holland kit. I was fairly certain that WGermany\'s wasn\'t adidas, but didn\'t know who it was - never heard of erima!
GREAT STUFF!!

I remember the 1978 World Cup and from what I remember at the time France had apparantly turned up without their shirts and so had to borrow the green and white striped tops from the local club in whose stadium they were playing. Interesting trivia or what!?

Interesting comments on the Green/ White jersey worn by France?, according to the official FIFA World Cup DVD, this jersey as the third jesey of Hungary who were the opponent\'s of France that day. It was decided at the stadium that the clash of colours meant one of the teams would have to wear a different kit, France had only one with them, as a result they had to wear Hungary\'s spare jersey\'s.

I believe Erima had some corporate connection with adidas in the late-70s/early-80s (both brands are German). Brazil\'s shirts also mysteriously switchedfrom adidas to Erima around 1980-81 (before they started wearing Topper).

Wow, i did not know Brazil had been sponsored by Erima. A Brazil erima shirt, that must definitely be a very rare article to find. Actually, even Brazil adidas shirts are rare to find, i have never seen one of them for sale. I had a topper 1982 Brazil shirt, but my mother threw it away because it was too worn out. Women know nothing about the emotional value of a football shirt....

Here\'s a good challenge: I am struggling to find a picture of the Holland Away kit that they wore in the 1980\'s. The one above shows the 1978 WC away kit and the 80\'s kit would probably have been very similar ie - adidas, white shirt with orange trim, orange shorts. however I can\'t find an image of it any where.

Good Luck

The deal with the Dutch jerseys having two (Puma) or three (Adidas) stripes on the sleeve started with Cruijff in 1974. By the time of the \'78 Finals, there were 2-3 additional Oranje Players who also had signed exclusively with Puma. This finally \"boiled\" over into the 1980 European Championships, were all Dutch Players sported the 3 stripes, but then put a piece of tape over the \"Trefoil\" that Adidas put on the right breast. The KNVB attempted to deal with this earlier during the 1978 Qualifying campaign (1976-77) by placing the KNVB Logo (Lion) on the right breast, where before and since, it sits on the left breast. Hope this helps, and I have literally \"thousands\" of photos of the Dutch Team from 1972-1986. if you want copies.

I'm not sure, but I guess that Ellesse was the sponsor of Italy on 1978 WC...
The Holland jersey had three lists, but some players removed one of those.... Cruijff did the same in 1974 WC, for example...
The Brazilians kits was made by Erima and Drastosa, but with adidas logo, always... Immediatly changed for Topper...
The Spain kit, for 1978, was Le Coq...
