The 1982 FIFA World Cup, the 12th staging of the World Cup, was held in Spain from June 13 to July 11. Spain was chosen as hosts by FIFA in July 1966. This World Cup was won by Italy, who beat West Germany 3-1 in the final. With its third World Cup title (after 1934 and 1938), Italy drew level with Brazil. This World Cup was marked by a series of great matches and is widely regarded as the second-best ever after the legendary 1970 tournament. This was also the first World Cup to feature 24 teams, an expansion from at most 16 in the previous tournaments.

They were in the group with Russia and Brazil and New Zealand (we did manage to beat them)...We missed out on next round on goal difference (again) It was a fairly classic dark blue shirt with a bit of white piping. Umbro I think. 21. Liam Scott, The new England Away kit for Euro 2008 is based on the Spain 82 away kit. 20. Stefan, Just agree with (most of) you that the shirts worn in the 70's and 80's were just wonderful. Not to compare with the NIKE trash of today for example. A pity that manufacturers like Adidas and Puma copied the designs of Nike and made their shirt nearly as awful! Let's say it in a metaphoric way: These old fashioned, simple designed shirts of the 70's and 80's had a "soul" while the new ones with their "flashy" designs (as someone here called it) are just "commerce zombies"! My favourite shirts are: Holland 74 and 78 (great lion logo), Brasil 82 (they will most probably never, never again wear Topper shirts) Argentina 82 (wonderful) and England 82 (unbeaten by now)! 19. It's a shame that the incredible recent growth of Nike, Adidas and, to a lesser extent, Puma means that the really big international teams will probably never again be made by companies such as Penalty, LeCoq, Admiral and Topper. 10. Eugenio, Congratulations, a great job. Top class design. These are the golden years, even better than the late `70s. Admiral designs were really innovative, I´ve always loved those England and Belgium kits. I have to confess that I´ve made two "home replicas" of the England kits, buying some polyester and giving it to a woman that sews quite well with a picture of what I wanted. The only way to get that shirts, official replicas are too expensive for me, because of currency spreads. Le Coq Sportif did a great work too for Argentina and Cameroon, and Puma repeated with a classy design for Austria, quite simillar to the 1978 one but with nicer details. Peru wears Penalty, a Brazilian manufacturer. I wonder what was first, the River Plate (Argentina) shirt or the Peruvian one, both are exactly the same. Responding to #8: Topper is a classic brand here in Argentina, some teams stills use their products, as well as the national basketball team, the volleyball team, and for some recent years, the rugby team, Los Pumas. Some tennis players like Guillermo Cañas are sponsored by Topper, too. Other brazilian teams use Topper as well, for example, Internacional (Porto Alegre). Even in Uruguay and Paraguay there are teams that use Topper. I can´t tell you how could Topper become Brazil´s provider from Spain 82 to Italia 90. Bye to everybody. 9. Looking foward to Mexico '86 and the sublime mesh England shirt. 8.Gervillian Swike, Just to say by the way before I go off, that this is an excellent article, a worthy follow up to that of the 1978 one. It's such a shame that the corporate nature of football shirt manufacture is such now that never again will we see Brazil's shirt being made by Topper (WHO???!!!). 7. Gervillian Swike, Interesting point - well to me anyway - is that the England away shirt is slightly different to that reflected in the design - check out the white band at the bottom of the collar. I looked at the England Football Online section on England shirts, and it acknowledges this strange variation, but it didn't even last the entire match for some!! It says: "England wore this Admiral shirt in 1982 and 1983. It was worn at the World Cup final tournament in Spain in 1982. However, on 29 June 1982 against West Germany in Madrid, England wore a variation of this design. The blue line across the chest was in the middle of the white band, instead of underneath it and they wore black outlined squad numbers on the right thigh. At half-time however, Paul Mariner and Phil Thompson changed into the shirts worn against France, in the opening game of the tournament, the other design." Incidentally, does anyone think that the Belgium badge was a direct influence on the modern Leeds one? 6. bertyshirty, all these shirts are classier than modern designs. plain and simple beats excessive flashy designs anyday 5. Falc   |2007-12-14 I remember seeing the Le Coq Sportif logo on the Italy warm up jackets, so I am guessing their logo-less shirts were made by the same. The material of the kits today may be more comfortable but the designs are terrible. The new Germany kits are awful. I hope Puma does some justice to their champion side when it comes out in February. The white kits worn by Italy against Scotland did not do much for me. Reply | Quote

Oswaldo Tinhorao  - Brazil: hidden publicity and T     |2008-01-02 Two comments about the Brazilian 1982 jersey. If you look real close at the Brazilian emblem, there is a white circle with some sort of symbol (green leaves, red fruit) in front of the Jules Rimet trophy. That was hidden publicity by "Café do Brasil", the holding that controlled the exports of Brazilian coffee. I have no idea how they managed to insert their brand right in our emblem without drawing the attention of FIFA executives. As for Topper, I grew up thinking it was a Brazilian brand. Back then or just a little later, Corinthians Paulista, the second most popular side in Brazil, would also wear Topper jerseys. If I am not mistaken, the brand belonged to Argentina based textile and shoe wear multinational Alpargatas, which were already well established in Brazil by the late 70s. So, when they began manufacturing the Brazilian national team jerseys, hardly anybody was aware of the fact that the firm was originally from Argentina. Reply | Quote

Keano1977  - Brazil shirt 1986   |2008-02-06 I was just wondering if anyone knows why the 1986 Topper Brazil shirt has the little round white circle with the green leaves on the crest when the actual Topper shirt they wore at the world cup dosent have this. FDV   |2008-02-28 Hi Alfredo,and hi all..precisely Italian federation allows Kappa to put the badge on the shirt in 1999,first in the history.Then in 2000 and in 2002 kappa badge did not appear on the front of the shirt but only on the shoulders.I liked very much this solution,I must admit that I miss the pure azzurra shirt of Italy,without kit supplier badge. Then puma arrived and posted 3 pumas on the shirt. In 2006 Italy has been the only Puma national kit without the 2 pumas near the collar on the shoulders,only one was there,the other was on the arm. In the new shirt,also Italy has been allined to the other teams kit template. I m also very angry because of the presence of only 4 kit suppliers in Euro 2008: Nike,Adidas,Puma,Umbro. Reply | Quote

Fed  - -Correction-   |2008-04-18 I must do a correction: in 1982 Italy kit was Le Coq, but in 1978 and 1974 was Adidas but logos or Adi trims was prohibited by italian laws until 1999. 1st time a logo appear in Italy shirt was in the late 99, match Danmark-Italy. Reply | Quote
