Lot 0015 Title A BLUE BRAZIL V. SWEDEN 1958 WORLD CUP FINAL SHORT-SLEEVED SHIRT Estimate 10,000 - 15,000 British pounds Pre-lot Text The life of Mario Zagallo is inextricably linked with the history of Brazilian football in the 20th century and beyond. As a player, Zagallo was part of the first Brazilian side to lift the World Cup in 1958, and again when they retained the trophy four years later in 1962. In 1970 he enjoyed one of the highest achievements as a national team manager winning the World Cup, this was his and his country's third time as champions and as such they took possession of the Jules Rimet trophy. Zagallo went on again to win the World Cup in 1994, this time as technical coordinator.
Victory in the 1970 World Cup was particularly special. It was the first time that the world could see, in televised technicolour, the amazing spectacle that is Brazilian "football art". The final match against Italy was unforgettable. First came Pele's spectacular header which culminated in his last international goal in official games wearing a Brazilian shirt (please see lot 43). The fourth and final goal scored by Brazil in this, arguably the greatest final of any World Cup, encapsulated the true essence of Brazilian football with several players working in perfect harmony to decisively take the World Cup for Brazil.
Many years after this momentous event, Pele wrote in his autobiography: "I have always had an enormous amount of respect for Mario Zagallo. After we had won the World Cup in 1970, I was grabbing a drink of water with Brito in the dressing-room when I felt a hand on my shoulder. Assuming it was just another journalist I didn't turn round, until Brito said, "Hey, it's Zagallo, man." I turned at once, and stood up. The coach and I put our arms out, and embraced, both of us crying. We hugged for some time, moved to tears by what had happened. I said to him, "We had to be together to become champions three times - it could only have happened with you." And I meant it - he had been with me in 1958 and '62, and had made it happen as coach in 1970."
(Pele: The Autobiography, Pele with Orlando Duarte & Alex Bellos; translated from the Portuguese by Daniel Hahn, London: Simon and Schuster 2006)
Mario Jorge Zagallo, was born in Alagoas, northeast Brazil, on August 9, 1931, into a Catholic family. A serious, honest, hard-working man is how Pele describes him, and so too would many players, fans and friends. He has dedicated more than 50 years of his life to football, and has always conducted himself with determination, devotion, and love to both his native land and to the Brazilian shirt. Apart from his international career, Zagallo also coached football in Brazil with notable success, enjoying a professional association with clubs such as Botafogo and Flamengo to name but a few.
Famously, the number thirteen is a lucky number for Zagallo. A variety of different reasons have been offered to explain this. One school of thought maintains that it goes back to his newly wed wife's devotion to Santo Antonio (or St Anthony) whose feast day is on June 13. Another ventured opinion is that it revolves around the 1958 and 1994 World Cups which Zagallo always believed would be special for Brazil. The figure of 13 is arrived at by adding 5 + 8, as well as 9 + 4. The tradition of exchanging shirts at the end of each match started early in Zagallo's career, and this continued at the behest of his son Mario Cesar who started to collect them. Zagallo always took care to return home after a game with a shirt from a member of the opposition. This unique and comprehensive collection now numbers approximately 1,500 shirts. Mario Cesar has finally agreed to let go of part of this peerless archive, and Christie's is privileged to offer a selection of this extraordinary football shirt collection at auction.
