JJB to pay fans over football shirt rip-off E-mail
Wednesday, 09 January 2008

Sports chain JJB Sports has agreed to pay back consumers who were unlawfully overcharged for football shirts.

Sports chain JJB Sports has agreed to pay back consumers who were unlawfully overcharged for football shirts. It’s agreed to give part-refunds to fans after Which? took legal action against the high street chain.

JJB was part of a cartel of seven companies fined a total of more than £16 million in 2003 for fixing the price of England and Manchester United football shirts in 2000 and 2001. Fans who paid up to £39.99 for certain England and Manchester United football shirts during specific periods in 2000 or 2001 and joined the "which" case against JJB Sports will receive a payment of £20 each.

England and Manchester United

However, if you bought one of the affected shirts but didn't join the case, you can still claim back £10.To do this, you must present either proof of purchase or the shirt itself, with its label intact, at a JJB store before 5 February 2009.

Which? Head of Legal Deborah Prince said: ‘The agreement reached with JJB Sports is a good deal for the hundreds of consumers who purchased football shirts and joined our case against JJB.

‘Many of those who purchased the relevant shirts still have the whole of next year to take their shirt or proof of purchase into a JJB store, so we encourage them to do so.’

Legal action

Which? used its legal powers under the Enterprise Act 2002 to launch an action for damages to pay back people who were overcharged. Further information on the specific shirts that are affected by this agreement and details of how to claim are available in the football shirts section of their website . Proof of purchase is a till receipt, credit card statement or bank statement showing the purchase during limited periods in 2000 and 2001, detailed on in our FAQs section. If you present a shirt, the payment is reduced to £5 if the label is missing, and any shirt presented will be indelibly marked.
