New Norwich City 08/09 Xara home & away shirts E-mail
Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Norwich City is delighted to announce details of the new 2008 home and away kits.

Following the announcement of AVIVA as Main Club Sponsor, Norwich City is delighted to announce details of the new 2008 home and away kits. Home kit runs for two years, until end of 2009-2010 season.

It is anticipated that 4,000 shirts in assorted sizes will be available the week commencing July 28. These are available through pre-order on a first-come, first served basis. If we are unable to fulfil your order, shirts will be available on general sale in mid August. Circumstances beyond our control may lead to this changing but we will use our best endeavors to fulfill this timetable.

Norwich City's nickname, "The Canaries", has long influenced the team's colours and crest. Originally, the club was nicknamed the Citizens ("Cits" for short), and played in light blue and white halved shirts, although the halves were inconsistent; "the blue Home kit runs for two years, until end of 2009-2010 seasonwas sometimes on the left hand side of the shirt and sometimes on the right." The earliest known recorded link between the club and canaries, comes in an interview recorded in the Eastern Daily Press with newly appointed manager, John Bowman in April 1905. The paper quotes him saying "Well I knew of the City's existence... I have... heard of the canaries."

"This as far as we can tell is the first time that the popular pastime of the day ie... rearing... canaries was linked with Norwich City FC... the club still played in blue and white, and would continue to do so for another two seasons."

By February 1907, the nickname Canaries had come more into vogue; thoughts that an FA Cup tie against West Bromwich Albion (nicknamed "Throstles" after a bird) was "a bird -singing contest" were dismissed by the polymath C.B. Fry as "humbug" but Bowman and Fry's colleagues in the national press increasingly referred to the team as Canaries.

City of Norwich Coat of ArmsThe following season, to match the nickname, City played for the first time in Canary livery; "yellow shirts with green collars and cuffs. One paper produced the quote 'The Cits are dead but the Canaries are very much alive'." Apart from the obvious colour link, a canary may seem an odd choice; however, many English football clubs have adopted small birds as emblems that symbolise agility and deftness around the field.

Away kit

Away kit runs for one year, until end of 2008-2009 season.

The new away kit will be exclusively unveiled at this year's Royal Norfolk Show (Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26) in the Norwich City marquee.

Exact launch details are to be confirmed.

The shirt prices are: Adult short-sleeve GBP 40, Youth short-sleeve GBP 30, Ladies' GBP 36, Goalkeeper Adult GBP 45, Goalkeeper Youth GBP 35, Adult long-sleeve GBP 45 and infant kit GBP 27.

Why don't AVIVA put Norwich Union on the shirt as it is more relevant to locals?

The sponsorship is away of softening the blow of dropping the Norwich Union Name altogether. As in 'we're changing the name but still commited to all things Norwich' Until the sponsorship runs out in 3 years!

Not a bad kit. Looks a bit like a recent Brazil one.
There was a rumour Canterbury would be making it but it looks like we're stuck with XARA

The home shirt is very nice even though that collar is a bit out of date. Its a huge improvement on the last two home kits.

A Canterbury kit would have been really cool, the yellow and green would have really suited there designs. But i guess we're stuck with 'finest Egyptian cotton' yet again...

NORWICH ARE TERRIBLE SO ITS GOOD TO SEE THEY HAVE A KIT TO MATCH THIER STYLE OF FOOTBALL.

Norwich need a new style of kit cause they are playing shit. The yellow shirt is too bright and bollocks and makes them look like pussies.

It's not about the way they look it's about the way they play. You can moan if we are bottom of the table five games into next season
I do agree about some of the comments about having Norwich Union instead of Aviva.

HALL OF SHAME
Ben   |2008-05-14
Stop moaning about sponsors, who made the kit and what the bloody thing looks like and lets concentrate more on the new season ahead and getting behind our team.... Lets see who we bring in on the transfer market and then we will have a better idea about whether we should be moaning or not.... Its guna be a busy summer for Glen seeing as he has just released 9 players, we need to be challenging at the top of the table next season and that means signing championship quality players....
Brendan   |2008-05-18
Not a bad shirt, could have been a lot worse. Goalie shirtt looks nice. Agree with Ben, stop worrying what the shirt looks like and get behind the team!

coming from a norwich fan, it isnt great at all, but aslong as we beat the ipswich scum cunts in it, i couldnt give two fucks. The people who say norwich are terrible are either dirty mancs/scousers or arsenal fans, or maybe even grays athletic fans.....fantastic.

im a norwich fan and i dont give a fuck if you say norwich are shit what a great shirt better than ipswich
