Norway drops new football crest under pressure E-mail

While 81 % of the FSC poll voters think this is an excellent design, The NFF management has decided that a new emblem will be devised for the national teams, with the Norwegian flag as part of it.

After massive complains by the Norwegian people about the new design, the NFF President Sondre Kfjord promised that feedback will be taken into account in a further process of developing a new emblem. The launch of a new emblem on Tuesday has provoked strong debate in the last few days. The NFF management is using the points of view that have come out as a background to the debate, and concluded that the teams will play with the flag on their shirts until a new emblem is finally ready.

"We have decided to work to develop a new emblem to include the flag, so that players can continue to play with the flag on their shirt", said the President. The debate has confirmed a strong engagement with Norwegian
international football and the position of football in Norway.

"The engagement shows that the national teams are important flag-bearers for the Norwegian people, and there are many people who are not pleased with the new emblem and want the flag back on the shirts, so it's something we have to take seriously. I can promise that the contributions will be taken into account in the further process to shape a unique identity for Norwegian international football", said Kfjord.

While I am personally not a big fan of the design I do appreciate that its an innovative, daring and brave piece of design. Any form of design that has these qualities runs the risk of being disliked - initially - and this seems to be what has happened here. But its just people's first reaction to it, given time they will get used to it and may appreciate it differently and eventually it will become as Norwegian as a fjord. How many innovative designs have been hated at first and then become simply part of everyday life. If its new and different it may be ahead of its time and it could take a while for people's opinions to catch up. I think its crazy that the Norwegian FA have withdrawn the badge after just a few days of criticism. They should stick to their guns and remain with the crest for the initial reasons that they agreed upon it in the first place. It must have fulfilled their brief?! Design by committee is always a bad idea.

I understand John Devlin's point about new innovative designs being disliked initially and accepted with pride in due course, and he may well be right. But the shift from the old design to this design was way too much. It's an awful badge, completely without any class or sense of dignity. It is literally a cartoon drawing and completely out of keeping with what is needed to represent a country. The Dutch lion, the English lions, the French cockerel, these are design classics, and I'm sure the Norway badge would have been accepted far more if it didn't look so animated.

While there are some that dislike the badge's design, the VAST majority of Norwegians are upset that they removed the Norwegian flag off the chest, where it has been for some 80 years. To 'play with the flag upon your chest' is something of a tradition.

There's also been calls for the NFF to simply move the badge to the right side of the chest and keep the flag on the left. Which would be a means to appease both sides without having to resort to 'design by committee' which was mentioned above.

Personally, I love the badge as it incorporates several historical elements into the badge, but has a crisp, modern look. But I also understand the immense national pride Norway has, as a relatively young country.

For all the curious ... I e-mailed the official shop the NFF would be selling the shirts from, and they said the Umbro order had been canceled and they did not know of a new release date. So, I don't know if they will still sell the 'dragon' shirts or if they intend to rework them, or ...

(And thanks for the recognition, footballshirtculture!)

The design is unique. I don't see the problem though I understand the thoughts of those individuals against it.

Waste of a very nice design - probably cost them a bit of cash as well.
