Everton unveil new Crest

Everton has introduced the next evolution of its Club Crest. The new design has been created following an extensive consultation process with fans, supporters' groups and branding experts.

Update Tuesday 28th May 2013

Putting it right

Robert Elstone, CEO, says: "Clearly the weekend's response has meant that we have reviewed how we went about the whole of the re-design process and whilst many objectives were achieved, we recognised we missed the key part out. Our Chairman had demanded widespread consultation and we stopped short of that. We talked to our Fans' Forum, our commercial partners and our experienced staff around the Club. That was not enough.

"We want to put this right. Whilst the time-constraints of kit suppliers in particular present challenges, which inevitably means the version released on Saturday will be in operation for the 2013/14 season, we are determined to give our fans a greater say in how we represent the Club on our jerseys, at Goodison Park and across media around the world.

"In advance of the 2014/15 campaign, we are turning to you to help us shape and refine the badge we'll adopt in the future. Evertonians from all sections of the fan-base will be pulled together in a fully transparent way. This group will conduct an in-depth review of all aspects of past and present Club Crests. The panel will then develop ideas and put forward suggestions to you. Evertonians will make the final decision.

"We have worked hard over recent years to give our fans a greater sense of involvement in the Club and dialogue flows openly and freely in many areas from the Fans' Forum, to Supporters' Clubs and of course, via Everton in the Community. We will ensure the same happens with the future development of your Club Crest."

Details on how the panel will be comprised and selected will appear in late summer.

The rigorous process, thoughts, benchmarking, homework and the design work is set out at www.evertonfc.com/crestevolution

As an Everton fan, I’m disgusted with this. There was hardly any input from fans and the fact they have got rid of the laurel wreaths is not popular with most of my mates I’ve spoke to. Why ‘EVERTON’ has to be so big I will never know. What next, EVERTON across the shirt like an MLS team?

The reason for it is simple, you can't patent latin phrases. So football clubs remove them while re-designing their badges, it's all about making more money.

Of all the teams' badges that could be given this simplification treatment, Everton was probably the team who least needed it. The old logo was about as far as you want to simplify a badge, because taking away the motto, spiral and wreaths has taken away all meaning, and we're left with an ambiguous hut or something. It looks daft! Man City is the team that should be applying this process to their badge...

So, dumbing down affects football at last. I suppose the reasoning behind this will be that Latin is a dead language? why assume that football fans can't understand or appreciate tradition? Legends, mottos etc are part of the fabric of the club and should'nt be discarded due to the dictates of fad or fashion. By the way, are toffees still given out at Goodison on match days?

As an Everton fan I was initially disgusted with this evolution of the club crest for the same reasons people are stating here.

I must say having seen it on some of the new training wear and the club website, it is starting to grow on me.

I would take any crest design, so long as Neil Lennon isn't made our manager.

Also believe me, the players will dot respect or play for him, he's an animal.

This is shocking and supporting a club who seem to have a need to change the badge on their shirt at regular intervals I've seen many efforts. This is just so American I'm guessing that Nike supplying your kit has had more to do with the change than everything else we have been told. I read that your board say due to modern machinery they can't produce badges that are too complicated.
Looks like Crystal Palace with their new crest are in trouble then.

My guess is that the change has the same reasoning that Arsenal's did when they changed a few years back.

Arsenal couldn't completely find the times/owners of certain elements were added to the old club crest, so trademarking it became impossible. I'd assume that elements on the previous Everton badge are similar. When were the wreaths added/spiral added etc...

That said, I don't like it either.

There goes Nike again with their habit of redesigning also club crests... A nice little service to Roma as well.

Luckily Inter went back to their original some years ago probably out of sheer protest from fans...
A good thing later "compensated" by Nike with last years red shirt effort of genius...

Why do footy fans hate any remotely modern take on the badge.
Isn't the "crest" just a logo?
Why have an ultra-modern shirt with a logo on it from the 1900's?
It would be cool if a team actually went for a decent logo instead of all this faux-traditional guff.

This isn't a protest against modernity it is a protest of dumbing down. Classic modernity in football has always been appreciated wheras this badge is bland, dreadfully scoped and removes much liked icons and motto. It is oddly shaped and has the name in the crest and the tower now looks odd. Many beautiful Victorian houses were replaces by concrete monstrosities in the name of modernity, this change is similar.

As a neutral, I don't mind it. It could've been a lot worse anyway. But no, it's not as nice as the old one, and it does seem to be an outright lie that the fans were consulted on the design. They are quite rightly annoyed. But it feels obvious to me that this badge was designed just because it was easier/cheaper for Nike to produce. See also: City's new crest.

Behave you idiot.....a [censored]ing blind man could see how bad a redesign this is and that they've completely ripped the tradition of the club apart by producing this shitty pre-school attempt!

Good thing is, is that the club have realised their enormous mistake and have acted swiftly to make a statement about the changes they will make to the new crest. Unfortunately though due to time constraints with our kit supplier, we'll be going ahead with this new version for the 2013/14 season.

If you didn't see already our supporters already protested and got the club to change the badge, with fan input for the 2014/15 season. As to Newcastle being a bigger football club than Everton, your last Premier League title was in 1926/27 and your last FA Cup was in 1955. Sorry but we don't think 2nd Division titles are worth a pot to piss in. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

While I understand the reasons for this (easier to produce, more modern) the crest IMO looks too simplistic for it's own good, it's lacks the classy quality that a crest should have.

Arsenal is a good example of modernizing and 'cleaning up' an old crest, unfortunately this isn't.
