winner-poland-nike-antonio-bordallo.jpg

We are very pleased to announce that the winner of our competition to design a Nike kit for Poland is Antonio Bordallo with his "Białe Orły" design.

From top to bottom (and certainly front to back) this kit holds originality and classic style in spades and every area gave the judges something to get excited about.

Firstly, the front of the shirt is bold, simple but incredibly effective.  We saw the Polish flag being incorporated in some form by the vast majority of the entries but we particularly liked how this design's bar effect also combined well with the centred crest, loyal to the flag's impression but also to modern design.

This coat of arms is positioned similarly when the flag is used for official events so, whilst centred crests aren't for everybody, this kept an element of national authenticity that appeals.  The crest perhaps seems a little higher than is standard but it works and going against the grain is what helps design to evolve.

The use of ecru brings originality.  An extra splash of colour did wonders for the most recent Holland kit and it that works here too.  On the edging on the sleeves - nicely tempered with the red, on the shirt's Swoosh and, particularly, on the socks the Poland kit is modernised with care and sophistication.  Traditionalism is not dispensed with but simply adapted to allow for an injection of new ideas.

Which takes us to the superb reverse.  On the back of the simple red v-neck we find the reference to the team's nickname and an understated use of the "wing" logo that so many designers used.  Lovely details added but carried out with restraint to not take away from the rest of the shirt and the wonderful wycinanki panel.  This is a tradition I certainly wasn't aware of prior to being involved in the judging of these designs and something that in this way, in a light grey rather than a watermark, puts a clear but not overbearing twist on the overall effect.

So there it is, a triumph for Antonio.  A great kit and that's without even mentioning the asymmetrical red stitching on the right sleeve, the flag design on the socks and the large Swoosh on the rear of the shorts (don't worry, we loved those parts too).  Congratulations.

Now, as much as we adored Antonio's design we shouldn't forget the other entries.  When the kits were being uploaded and also first shown to our guest judges (I could tell you who they are but I'd have to shoot you afterwards) there was a mixture of delight, excitement and - for some - nervousness.  The final decision was far from easy.  So many different styles, approaches and standpoints but in so many cases the result is superb.

Definitely the best kit from all of the designs entered, very good choice for the winner of the comp.<br /><br />I just don\'t like the socks, but it is a sort of wacky thing that Nike would try out, so it\'s cool in that way (Holland blue socks, Portugal all red etc.)

Contratulations Antonio, this is one of the most classic and beatifull shirt I ever seen...<br />And you show to everyone that brazilian designers are really good...<br />The wycinanki panel make this shirt masterpiece, unique...

beige socks????? no way jose! the shirt is vey nice though.

I don\'t like the design at all. Front and back look like different shirts, socks are terrible. On the front side the badge and the stripes are not balanced well plus there is virtually no room for the player\'s number at the front.

isn\'t the back based on the nike basketaball jerseys from this year

I like this. It brings together some nice elements.

Is it actually going to be their new kit or is this just a bit of fun...?

\"isn\'t the back based on the nike basketaball jerseys from this year\"<br /><br />-I think so. The pattern on the back would be even better if those shapes and patterns were culturally Polish designs-things from Polish art, culture, whatnot.<br /><br />I love the socks, btw! Dope uni!

One of the top three designs that were up. I can\'t imagine how difficult it was to decide a winner in this one with the few, though great original designs.

Well, thank you guys for all the good things you\'ve said about my creation, I recommned you also check my other drawings, that I consider as good as this one:<br /><br /><br />As long I\'m a Fashion Design student and my goal is to work as a sportswear designer for major companies indeed, does anyone know where and how I can \"knock on Nike\'s door\" and show them my creations? I\'d be very glad if they produce something similar to that (and based on the comments on my blog - http://sport2wear.wordpress.com/ - a lot of people would love to buy this one too!).<br /><br />the back is actually is inspired on the basketball jerseys, but it´s just an adaptation to football style. Mr.T,if you don\'t know, those shapes and patterns ARE ACTUALLY culturally Polish designs-things from Polish art, culture just as you said. It\'s just you do a good survey to find out what WYCINANKI represents to the polish people.<br /><br />my best regards to all of you and Merry Xmas!<br...

SHOULD OF KEPT PUMA OR GOT A DESENT COMPANY ADIDAS

It\'s very good design but the Poland FA logo should be moved to the left side and then you can put (as usual) the number in the middle. The socks have good design also but it should be white and you can put beige lines (replacing the white lines) above the red lines. Antonio, can you do ManU and AC Milan shirt?

I saw all the kits in this contest and honestly I think there were some better kits than this one. Still, this one is nice to.

Nice but simple kits. There aren\'t any chances to do some revolution in kit design in theese times. And I don\'t think they will use gold socks...

It is not traditional so you say it is wrong, within recent times football kits have been imaginative in their design and layout, and I think the shirt above does have the right balance, maybe if the \'Wycinaki\' was continued over the shoulder it would have looked more connected, but the drawing would then have looked too detailed as can sometimes happen in illustrations, I do disagree that their is lack of room for a front shirt number too if the shirt was indeed real, the number could be inserted easily below the bottom most red horizontal line.

Hey .... TONY BORDALLO!!!<br />it´s a honour to see you to become a Winner to design a Nike kit for Poland .....<br />MY CONGRATULATION MAN<br />and Thanks for you FRIENDSHIP ......<br />Tulio from Brazil<br />http://www.tuliofuzato.com.br (The Double Amputee Drummer)

Hi Antonio,<br />I know you were trying to blend modern design with traditional Polish culture. hats off for that. however, I\'m quite sure this would not appeal to any of the players or supporters. These wycinanki are very much associated with small-town people and my connotations are not very positive here. not to mention the fact that they are produced by women so it would be as if they wore knit sweaters on the field, wouldn\'t you agree? I definitely preferred Puma\'s design with the Polish knight - husarz - now that had some positive associations with fighting for your country.<br />That said, I do think this is a job well done and the front is quite appealing. I think we already had a similar pattern some time ago but it is very good.<br />take care and good luck with your career

\"understated use of the \'wing\' \" This is Poland National Soccer Team Logo.

I\'m Pole too and I think so these kits are terrible !!! I don\'t want to see Polish footballers in this kits. There are terrible, I write once again

  1. fsc

i think its a fantastic masterpiece. i am no pole(northpole?)<br />but this one would suit em first class. The 2006-2008 puma kits were bit boring i think-this one would would kick ass.<br /><br />respect to those of you, that can create such shirt models

  1. fsc

Actually, this kit bears some resemblance to the ones that Nike designed for our national team in 1996-1998. <br />I look forward to seeing what kits Nike will provide for our first matches. I didn\'t like PUMA designs (too simple) and wanted KAPPA or ADIDAS but our football association chose NIKE. My favourite all-time Poland kits are those from 1970s and early 1980s. Adidas could start a heritage line of some kind-the same they did with France 84, Holland 88 and Denmark 92 shirts.
