In the 56th edition of the seasons curtain-raiser The Tractor Boys and reigning FA Cup holders took a hammering from the league champions Forest who stormed to a 5-0 victory. Martin O'Neill bagged a brace with Withe, Lloyd and Robertson also on the scoresheet in a 90 minutes to forget for Bobby Robson's men. The defeat did not prove so damaging though as Town went on to qualify for Europe this season and would go on to win the UEFA Cup in '81. The Scotland international Burley was a lynchpin of the team and almost ever present from making his debut back in 1973 until he left for Sunderland fifteen years later.
