Oranje went on to top a tough qualification group that also included rivals West Germany and Finland and seal their place at Italia 90. Wouters had been part of the glorious Euro 88 winning side in the summer and was in superb form at this time going on to be awarded the Dutch Footballer of the Year in 1990, an incredible feat considering the competition.
