The sides had met in both '90 & '91 in qualification for Euro '92, the Dutch had prevailed in that campaign with Portugal narrowly missing out in runners-up in the group.
The Selecção showed their strength though here with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Holland showing the European champions were nothing to be feared. Oceano and Cescar Brito got the goals and Paulo Torres played the full match in this his international debut. The Sporting CP youngster made only one more appearance for his country at this level coming in the US Cup later this summer and had been a part of the triumphant 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship winning team.
