England 1983 U-21 player shirt by Admiral believed to have been issued to Wright for the 1984 UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualification Group 3 match against Hungary played at St James' Park, Newcastle on the 26th April '83.
This was Wright's second game for the U-21 team and his great form for Southampton and in his four appearances at this level meant he was rewarded with a first senior cap in May '84.
This was the only time that Wright played in the home kit as #5 for the U-21 team, wearing the away kit against Greece and playing as #6 on the other occasions. England had suffered a shock defeat to Greece in Piraeus a few rounds earlier and could not afford any more slip-ups. This was a tight affair here and Hungary looked to be on course for a draw until Paul Walsh found a 75th minute winner for the Three Lions. England went on to win the competition for the second year running and Wright went on to play at Euro 88, Italia 90 and Euro 92 and won a total of 45 caps.
