Adidas Europass match ball Euro 2008

After unveiling the new Adidas WAWA ABA Africa Cup 2008 match ball  during the draw for the MTN Africa Cup of Nations 2008 in Ghana six weeks ago, now a few days before the EURO 2008 draw on Sunday in Luzern, football giant Adidas showed its new official Euro 2008 match ball for the first time at the world premiere in the Salzburg hangar 7.

At the Final Draw for the UEFA EURO 2008™ in Lucerne, adidas and UEFA officially unveiled the adidas "EUROPASS": the official match ball of the competition. The ball's new surface structure allows players to control and direct it perfectly in all weather conditions. The revolutionary PSC- Texture™ consists of a sophisticated and extremely fine structure on the ball's outer skin that guarantees optimum grip between ball and boot.

Captains' innings
Andreas Ivanschitz and Alexander Frei, the national team captains of the two host nations, were on hand to set the ball rolling – with EUROPASS boasting a surface structure which adidas says "allows players to control and direct it perfectly in all weather conditions".

Name game
The name EUROPASS was given to symbolise the connection between Alpine neighbours Austria and Switzerland. It also represents the passes players will make on the pitch during UEFA EURO 2008™ as well as the co-operation between fans who will make their way to the finals.

Ball design

The adidas "EUROPASS" combines tradition with modernity. Its classic colouring - a white base colour with black dots - calls to mind the balls of bygone decades, yet its bonding with round dynamic elements in silver and red results in an innovative and very modern design which perfectly suits the host countries. Both countries combine tradition with creativity and a strong record of innovation in developing new products. The national flags of both countries have also been integrated into the ball design, with eight circles in a subtle silver effect. The 12 black dots contain individual graphic elements developed by UEFA to accompany the EURO logo. These elements stand for passion, friendship, action, training, fans and the winning goal, which appear as watermarks in the black dots of the adidas "EUROPASS".

Like +Teamgeist™, the official match ball of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, the adidas "EUROPASS" is constructed out of 14 panels using revolutionary Thermal Bonding Technology. This combined with the new PSC-Texture™ surface structure gives the "EUROPASS" its perfect handling characteristics and allows the players exceptional ball control. The unique outer skin improves power transmission, creates greater swerve and increases accuracy on the pitch, in all conceivable weather conditions. And for the goalkeeper too, providing a much better grip between glove and ball, substantially improves his catching of the ball.

The ground-breaking performance features of the adidas "EUROPASS" have been demonstrated in comprehensive comparison tests at Loughborough University in England and in countless checks in the adidas football laboratory in Scheinfeld.

Experience

Adidas' experience in football manufacturing is unsurpassed anywhere in the world, and is leading the industry in the production of the most modern and innovative balls since 1963. Since 1970, adidas has provided the official match ball for all major UEFA and FIFA tournaments. From 2008, adidas will also make the official ball for the Africa Cup of Nations organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In the future, adidas will continue to use innovative technology to extend its world-leading position in football production and thus strengthen its position as the authentic symbol for high-performance sports articles for professionals and amateurs alike. adidas also intends to unveil more revolutionary innovations in match ball production for the UEFA, FIFA and CAF competitions.

The DFB got delivered a vehicle load of the new miracle pill to Frankfurt immediately!

The new match ball will retail from December 3rd, 2007. The price will be 119,- Euro.

I think I\'ll wait to see it moving before making my mind up about it, but my initial thoughts were it\'s slightly reminiscent of the good old Tango ball of the early 1990s.

I\'m not sure why anyone was expecting something other than a modified Teamgeist. I think the ball\'s appearance is quite attractive, reminiscent of the Telstar, and I\'ve also gotten used to the Teamgeist over two years, which I think really is both an attractive and functional design. The Fevernova and Roteiro are better left forgotten, what a sad couple of years that was.

i dont think looks have anything to do with the ball, clearly it has been advanced since the 2006teamgiest ball, the new glass cover will ensure your ball wont be scarred for awile, its light and has great grip unlike the teamgeist which alot of people complained about in wet conditons. im getting this ball tomorrow, when it makes it debut in july, everyone will be looking for it.

In my opinion it\'s rather a modern version Telstar (circles instead of pentagons) than a version of Tango, as a few commented above. I guess that\'s what the guys from Adidas wanted. On TV, the round circles resemble oval figures, kind of weird...

I wish they bring back the old style Telstar, a symbol from an era of great football.

So it\'s basically a Teamgeist ball with a textured surface. The bumps on the surface perfect the flaws of the Teamgeist that it was so perfectly round that it didn\'t actually fly smoothly & predictably. With the bumps, it\'s like the dimples on a golf ball - I don\'t really get it, but I know it makes it fly truer. They also help in the rain too I guess.
