United's defeat to Everton on Saturday was a blow to the Reds' title hopes, but assistant boss Mike Phelan believes it's all part of the battle of a title run-in.
Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man says United have the experience to overcome Saturday's setback and register an important win over West Ham on Tuesday.
The Hammers clash was brought forward due to United's involvement in Sunday's Carling Cup final. And with Chelsea not in league action until the weekend when they entertain Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, United can close the gap on the Blues to just one point.
"[The title run-in] is a race and it’s a battle at times," Phelan tells United Review. "You’ve got to make sure you’re in it, and then it can swing your way or against you at the last minute. We have the experience and tradition of being in these races to draw upon and it will be important that we know how to handle the run-in this season."
Sir Alex said that his men would not panic after defeat at Goodison Park, saying his team would show trademark resolve to return to winning ways. But Zola's side are fighting desperately against relegation, and they will not make Tuesday an easy ride for the Reds.
"West Ham will be difficult opponents - they’re desperate for points for different reasons than ourselves," Phelan added. "That said, we always have a good, entertaining game with them and that shouldn’t change."
