Before professionalism was recognised by the Football Association in 1885, the game was dominated by amateur teams from the south of England, largely drawn from the public schools where the game had originated. In Scotland, thanks mainly to the pioneering efforts of the Queen's Park club, the game quickly took root among the working classes in the 1870s.
