ENGLAND shirts could be BANNED at pubs

England football shirts could be banned at pubs screening live World Cup matches.

Killjoy British cops have urged landlords to bar anyone wearing a Three Lions top, as they want to avoid a repeat of the violence that has marred previous events, particularly if England lose, The Sun reports.

"We often hear of a loss of pride in Britain, now cops want to ban the England shirt. It''s like saying anyone who wears one is a yob," said a fan.

The advice comes in a letter from the Metropolitan Police to pubs in Croydon, South London.

Among World Cup guidance, it suggests "dress code restrictions - example no football shirts". It also urges using plastic glasses and door staff.

Pubs are not obliged to follow the advice, but it warns: "Police will not hesitate to use powers under the Licensing Act should we find you are not actively supporting the prevention of crime."

Its should be down to the landlords.. why should pubs that have no issues when football is on, be penalised for the one that do..

Venues that have had issues in the past should have this enforced, and be told they risk heavy fines if they have any issues (if they refuse the above).

Not everyone wearing an england shirt is a yob. There are some that are yes.

Isn't this just you stereotyping someone because of what they are wearing?

I would say that anyone wearing an England shirt supports England. Its just supporting your own country.

Don't see why the police can't just realise that people want to have pride in their country. They should punish the ones that cause trouble, not everyone.

You can see the point if it was in Scotland, Wales, NI. Would it be the same if it was someone wearing a Germany or Argentina shirt in the pub I can't imagine there going to say anything about people in Algeria Paraguay and American shirts in the pubs. Why don't the Police and law system actually punish trouble makers I goto the pub when Newcastle or England are playing and there has been no trouble even if people have been wearing opposition colours instead of saying this.

It truely is a joke. Just because 2/3 years ago a couple of dip-s**ts went on a pissed up rampage in the town centre and pushed over a bench when England lost. The Met need to engage "the" brain cell and sort out the real trouble makers/gangs.

thats good, England should just take this law just for the first world cup match against USA, might be the only loss in the group stage then they'll lose in Semifinals to Brazil and they get fourth place losing to Spain and USA will face Brazil which makes USA to win the first world cup :)

NEVER write the Germans off- they always seem to get it right at the World Cup. Annoyingly.

USA will make it to the quarter finals at absolute best- but even that is provided they don't face Germany in the second round... or Algeria do a Cameroon Italia 90/ Senegal 02.

England to lose a close final against Spain.

it 's a terrible state off affairs when British law can tell us what we can and can't wear . i bet other nationalist in the uk will be able to wear there football shirts during the world cup . welcome to the uk we are now a police state country , were we are not allowed to have equal rights anymore , we not allowed to speak in what we believe in anymore , the government if they had there way would ban , football , pubs , smoking (e.t.c) . i don't know why Gordon brown don't build a wall around the uk , like the Berlin wall and call the police force the stasi , it's a sad day for English football if the pub landlords give into to the police , not everyone wearing a England top is a thug !!

The article is from the Sun. It's therefore extremely likely to be exaggerated and not fully truthful.

Many pubs and clubs already operate a similar dress code for all football shirts.

I think the advice - note the word 'ADVICE' - of the Met is to deter fans from rival clubs sparking arguments and is potentially taken out of context with regards the England shirt.

Why does anyone actually BELIEVE whats printed in The Sun.

I remember a few years ago, at the 2006 World Cup, the Sun reported that Muslims were trying to stop people wearing England shirts as they found it offensive.

Of course it turned out to be total fabrication, with Muslim spokesmen saying they had no problem with it whatsoever.

Now The Sun tries it again, and evetybody falls for it again.

Anybody wanting to protest should boycott The Sun, because they're the people peddling this nonsense.

So they're afraid that, if England loses, people in England shirts would get violent, presumably against anyone in the pub from the country we lost to.

But if the English fans aren't wearing English shirts, that suddenly strips of them of any pride in their country attached to the pride in their shirts?

Seriously?

Banning wearing a shirt doesn't prevent violence, it just makes it more indiscriminate.

Quite frankly, I'd rather have English fans attacking people because they're wearing someone else's shirt, not just because they're brown.

With the world cup comes millions of pounds being spent on kits, team merchandise, TV's, booze in the bar, booze in the shops etc. thatetc.

The government WANT the public out in the bars spending money on booze. Do you think it was a coincidence that the Budget before this summers world cup has a dramatic rise for cider drinkers.

Cider the 3rd most popular summer drink in the U.K

I think we have lost all pride, think of the tax the country will lose with the several million football shirts that could have been sold. It is no news though we have no identity or pride left we didnt need to fight germany in the war. they should have used the immigration policy. The betting shop by my home was full of england flags during the last world cup, they were told to take them down as it would offend the foreign population. Im sorry, but how can you offend a person with a flag of a nation they chose to reside!. Nothing against the peopel that live here, but I am sure if you asked the average foreign migrant they would NOT have any issues with it

I am British, English to be precise, (proud of it) and to be perfectly honest this ban doesn't surprise me. As usual, the morons of this country let us down. Unfortunately, a phenomenon which still baffles me, is the fact that a group of drunk English football fans will usually be aggressive. I don't care what you say, it's the truth. And racist too, some retards still bringing up WW2 and stirring anti-German hatred. Obviously people who don't have two brain cells to rub together. This is the group of people I like to call "The Sun Readers", a group of uneducated racist xenophobes who shout "England" through a beer-reeking mouth slashed out of their faces. I love my country, but damn it's host to some moronic people.

Shirts have not been banned. The licencing laws in this country will allow any landlord to refuse service with out reason, so if they believe that muppets will get violent if England lose then any way to help stop this is a nessacary evil. As for London, I am a Londoner and English, my local will not ban the shirts and i will be watching with many ethnically diverse English men and women in my English shirt along hopefully with some supporters of our oppositon to create a good banter. Football is fun and to be enjoyed!! Life and work are supposed to be the hard bit.

All I can say is wear your shirt with pride and wave the flag as vigorous as you can!! It's weak on the part of the Met plus any other police forces and idiotic! Imagaine turning a group of lads away from their local because most have England shirts on, that will cause the problem!! Pubs won't stand for it anyway due to the massive loss of earnings. Plus, lets face it being told not to wear a particular garment, that, to the best of my knowledge, is not currently banned under the laws of England is frankly a complete contravention of our human rights!! C'mon England

hey, i'm a scotsman, I am engaged to an english girl and have an english daughter. If any coppers come up to me and ask me to remove my little girls t-shirt with a heart on it with the england flag inside it, then they will get a stark response with two words in it. The same goes for any foreigner who asks. Who do they think they are! Like i say, two words .FOOOOK OOFFFFFFF! haha.

All types of sport is big business for the players and management, its a job with income every week. But from the fans point of view, they have no financial interest in the sport, they just pay week in week out to watch their team come rain, snow and frost. win or lose they watch cricket, golf which is like watching paint dry, they watch 22 grown men kick a bag of wind around, why do they do this, is it for pride, pride for what, their country, the country they live in that tax them to death. They wear either their england, chelsea or whatever shirt, but for what, so that people know who they support, I dont give a shit who they support and dont need to know because they are only makimng money for the shirt makers.

I really do not understand the mentality of any sports fan because there is nothing in it for them but pride and the world would be a much better place if sport was banished.

pS My family and myself are british, they might be proud of Britain but I am certainly not

Lets go back to pride for a moment, what does pride in your team or country do for you, absolutely nuthin, it does not make you rich, nor does it give you a better job with better prospects, it does not give you anything but pride, and pride in my eyes in nuthin

gonads -
I am an avid tennis and motorsport fan aswell as football. Does the same apply for those sports too? Motorsport isn't necessarily about national pride, does that place it in the same category?

I watch these sports because I enjoy watching them. I'll watch most football matches that are on while I'm about, and always like to support the local teams. The only items of official merchandise I own are three shirts and a jumper from my team which have been accumulated over a period of twelve years. I would also like to point out that my team is a Championship side, not full of over-paid over-rated tossers, and that I'm a woman. And no, I'm not a butch, mouthy chav woman either, although granted I will be sitting in my living room shouting at the telly.
As for my England shirt? Too expensive. That will be coming from New Look.

There, I've had my say.

Isn't it rather telling that the first mention of immigrants on this page was from a comment, not from an article.

The reason police forces have RECOMMENDED that pubs take these measures is to reduce violence. I personally don't think it makes a difference to violence what shirt you're wearing. I'll hit you anway.

Back to the point, immigrants have nothing to do with this decision it's all you thick tossers that are making it a problem. If you are stopped from wearing England shirts in pubs it is down to the landlord of said pub, not the police. Stop making mountains out of molehills you complete set of censoreds.

I'm too intelligent to be sucked into this rubbish but I'll educate a few of you, as someone with expert knowledge of the law. Firstly, there is no reference what-so-ever to any 'foreigners' taking offence. The so-called 'ban' is purely for prevention of anti-social behaviour reasons, not, as the sensationalist tabloid 'reporters' may wish you to infer, to prevent non-nationals taking offence. Secondly, I do not for one second believe that police will attempt to arrest those wearing England shirts. I am no fan of the police, but to assume this shows complete ignorance of the law and common sense. The advice is for pub landlords and managers to prevent public disorder in and around their establishment. I haven't seen the actual document, but I wouldn't be surprised it didn't even have anything at all to do with the upcoming WC and was just general advice given by the police authority. In places like Belfast wearing football shirts is banned in most pubs because of the trouble it causes. Also, the reference to plastic cups and door-staff seems irrelevent: most pubs which are near football grounds,or even onces that just attract large numbers, are staffed with security and use plastic cups, for safety reasons. Finally, I haven't had the privilege of visiting Croydon, but I will make a rather sweeping generalisation that most people that drink in the pubs in football shirts are louts, or prone to the odd public order offence. To jump on this "WE R INGERLANDZ AND WE R PROUD" nonsense is just taking the bite that the scumbag tabloid Newspapers like The Sun are feeding you. They conjur up stories and feed you with misleading headlines, using laws they dont understand and twisting them to make a story which might help their paper sell. If I leave you with one piece of advice it is this: never, ever, ever, believe what you read in the tabloids, ESPECIALLY The Sun newspaper.

I will stick my neck out and make this prediction: not a single person this WC will be arrested for wearing an England shirt.

Although, I am confident many English-shirt wearing louts WILL be arrested for public order offences, and the tabloids will probably twist that to make a headline which goes something like "England fan arrested for wearing Three Lions shirt". Do not fall for their lies.

Good day to you all.

The whole thing is farsical, the fact it came from The Sun makes it all the more unbelievable and probably nearer to the point is that someone is trying to stur up racial hatred.

This is a bit of a joke. And anyone who says there isnt trouble between rival teams is stupid. there are problems and those problems need to be addressed, but a complete ban on football shirts is not the answer......its just a cheaper way of getting the desired result. how about extra police and plastic police presence during the games which have a potential for causing violence......this is typical of this country. This has nothing to do with racism, its the governments lack of social awareness which makes them act so retarded. As people have said, there can be games, which have the potential for violence, but they dont because the people there have sense.....its only the egotystical, stereotype of a thug which still exists in Britian (not just England) who spoil it for the rest of us. Lets hope the new coalition government listens to its voters rather than looking at the balance of probabilities.

The whole thing has been blown out of all proportion, come the world cup everyone who wants to follow England and have a drink down their local will be wearing their England shirts if that's what they want to do, some city centre bars and clubs will ban football shirts as they have always done,The Sun just doing its usual nationalistic spin on what are just guide lines set down by the police to try and prevent trouble during the world cup. The sale of England shirts will probably go up due to this, if there is trouble after a match the people causing it will probably have consumed too much alcohol or just be out for trouble anyway weather they are wearing colours or not.

METROPOLITAN POLICE sent a letter of GUIDANCE to a few pubs in CROYDON, ADVISING them of a dress code to curb any violence if england should lose. THIS ISNT A NATIONAL THING, NOR IS IS BEING POLICED IN ANYWAY. Why people are picking up on... this over a month after it was even announced shows how much people love jumping on the bandwagon

Maybe it was advised at pubs/clubs that dont want to associate themselves with football. Much like Wetherspoons used to do before they decided they were missing out on a chunk of profit from having a TV in their pubs... They used to stop people coming in, in football shirts. Its not a new thing, its just a story the media ran with, which has ... See moreturned into a game of chinese whispers and ended up with everyone jumping on a bandwagon which doesnt exist.

Funny how its turned into "people cant wear them because it may offend others" - like i said chinese whispers

Knowhere did it say "during the games" either ... Lets not forget 2 of our games are on a Friday at 19:30, Sat at 19:30...If we win our group our next game would be Friday at 19:30, win that Sat 19:30

Could well (and was likely) to have been aimed at the pubs/clubs people will be going to "after" they have been on the piss all day wearing there england shirt. When they try to get in after a skinful of beer and are turned away become abusive and potentially violent (which we have all seen no doubt) If for example "croydon" which is where this sent to had a blanket ban on people wearing them full stop or after a certain time then it eliminates the risk factor from the off of this happening

You wouldnt go out on a normal night out wearing an england shirt expecting to get into pubs/clubs.

That is why the police are advising of things like this. You cant win in this country. I remember back in the 90's when England lost and loads of people went rioting through Andover tipping over and injuring the workers in the "brati" van just because they were German. You would expect them to advise them not to be there but i imagine they didnt and instead everyone would have expected the police to deal with the rioting.

Another relatively easy theory is with players names on the back, tend to be reprasentative of the club they support. Only takes one wrong comment about a players name after a few beers, someone takes it wrongly and it all kicks off. Again i have seen this happen before

Yes they are idiots before they put the shirts on, but there is no denying it, when the football shirts come on the fights do tend to break out.

I will even give you an example: This is after England won a game during the 2006 world cup at a local pub - Big fight kicked off, people went to calm it down and look what it turned into. This was about a 30 man brawl in the end, which ended up with someone trying to glass someone and another fella breaking their arm. We were their with our sunday football team and just trying to break a few fights up, people ended up involved http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/2359/chestnute.png

I'm English, but find it very difficult to be proud of that when I come across people like you.

Sharing my nationality with your type makes me feel anything but proud, you lousy ignorant excuse for a human.

Regards

Wow! That was incredible. It's astonishing how you can type with Nick Griffins censored in your mouth. I'm always impressed by multi-taskers.

Anyone who believes this pile of crap is an idiot. It's not true, it's lazy journalism and is purely fuelling racial hatred. Whoever wrote this should frankly be ashamed of themselves, as should anyone who believes this tabloid shite.

No-one is offended by your England shirt. No-one is stopping you from wearing it. Get over it and move on.

wow, you guy do realize this whole thing is a practical joke, i mean for a start the whole theory is ridiculous , for it to become law, parliament would have to draft legislation, it isn't something the police can just say, and what motive would the government have in losing massive amount of public support so soon after an election; that already very few people have any confidence in.

Also, to make an act in such short notice, they would need to consort the privy council (the queen + previous prime ministers etc.) and make and 'order in council' but this can only be done in emergencies or when parliament isn't sitting. since parliament is sitting, and since people wearing football shirts isn't exactly an emergency there is no way they can pass this law before the world cup.

so everyone just calm down and drop it.
