We are currently writing a book on the 1974 World Cup and were wondering if anyone could help us identify the kit manufacturer for the following national teams:

West Germany - believe this maybe Erima but would like it confirmed.
East Germany
Brazil - possibly Athleta
Italy

Many thanks for any help you can give us.

Hi Jerren

Thank you for your quick reply. It's really good to hear that West Germany wore Erima - brilliant that you have a match worn shirt.

Would really love to know how you know that Brazil definitely wore Athleta - were you interested in this tournament? did you have information on this kit? Would be great to know.

Thanks for your help - great to hear from you

Hi

Unfortunately I don't have a matchworn Brazil shirt from '74 myself but I know a man that does!

I can give him a shout, sure it won't be a hassle to get some pics for you, if you can leave an email address I'll let you know

I guess the problem in those days was not many teams sported the manufacturer's logo on their shirts - ie Italy wore a plain blue shirt with the national badge only displayed. I know the Dutch wore adidas in the '74 WC - and that Cruyff only had 2 stripes down his sleeves (not 3) due to some sponsorship issue (but I guess you know that).

Rich,

Thanks a lot for your email. Most kits did carry the manufacturers logo however, East and West Germany, Brazil and Italy did not which is sort of what is causing us the problem.

We have had it confirmed that West Germany wore Erima and Brazil were supplied by a company called Athleta so we are down to just two outstanding teams.

You are absolutely right about Cruyff who had a separate contract with Puma and refused to wear the "three stripes" Adidas kit.

Thanks for your time in getting back to us.

Diadora (1985-1994)

Hi Toni,

That is absolutely fantastic, you must really enjoy your subject. This is clearly something which you know a great deal about.

Do you know if Adidas also supplied the Italian kit for the 1974 qualifying tournament or were they just suppliers for the Finals ?

Thanks again for your help, it is really most appreciated.

Hi Ron, Hi Jon,

The Squadra wears for the first time an adidas shirt during its friendly match : Italy - West Germany 0-0 (26/02/1974 in Roma).

The contract between Adidas and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) began the 1st january 1974.

The last qualifying match for the 1974 German World Cup was Italy-Swizerland (2-0) on the 20/10/1973.

Best regards,

Toni

PS : Sorry for my english...
