The FA has revealed a new version of its iconic ‘Three Lions’ Crest – the visual identity of The FA and England teams. The new design takes its inspiration from the 1948-49 Crest.
The iconic ‘Three Lions’ Crest has been refreshed to give greater visual standout in today’s digital environment.
It draws directly from the significant heritage the Crest embodies – namely the College of Arms version commissioned by The FA in 1948. It is the first time in seven years The FA has made changes to its Crest.
It includes redrawn Three Lions, more authentic-looking Tudor roses and a new colourway for the England Crest – lighter blue – to differentiate it from the previous version and enhance its on-shirt presence.
The England Senior Team will wear the Crest for the first time on 28 March in the match against Slovakia at Wembley Stadium.
Extensive research was conducted by The FA with different groups before the design changes were undertaken in-house. The aim was to establish what ‘The FA’ and ‘England’ represent in people’s lives, and to gain a greater insight into the sense of national identity the ‘Three Lions’ can deliver.
The FA’s Group Commercial Director, Jonathan Hill, commented: “We have taken great care in updating The FA’s ‘Three Lions’ Crest.
"The new designs have been modernised for today’s digital world, whilst also ensuring that they reflect the rich heritage and traditions of the Crest - particularly the 1948-49 version.”
The single-lion emblem was first adopted by Henry II when he became King of England in 1154. It was added to by Richard I (The Lion-heart) who added a second, and then third lion by the end of his reign in 1199.
However it was not until 1872, nine years after The FA was established, that the Crest featured in an England game, adorning the players’ shirts in the world’s first international match, between England and Scotland in Glasgow.

I would love to see something that represents the nations local Football Associations and not the royal family!
Colours may look better in the cloth.
oppsss...old one.
I prefer a darker blue, but this lighter is not bad.
About the word ENGLAND above the crest... I\'m not disturbed by it, was in 1999 when the FA added it on the crest?
What about England\'s away shirt? Will the new badge be posted also on the red shirt?
1. There\'s no need to have \'ENGLAND\' above the crest - any football fan knows which country the crest represents.
2. They should keep the lions dark blue to match England\'s navy shorts.
However, I would recommend one change to the FA\'s own crest : the name should be changed from \'The FA\' to \'SWEET FA\' because SWEET F*CK ALL is what they\'re about. GRRRR!
a) The FA wants to promote its new shirt during the recession
b) The old crest wasn\'t printer friendly so they redesigned one that costs half the money to produce and they can iron onto underpants.
c) It looks like the FA chiefs children got at it with a box of crayons
c) the small lion hates you
Probably more than most of us will earn in 5 years!!!
text says design was done in-house which I believe it was so no rich design guys on the back of it.
it\'s positioned as an evolution not a revoltion so I agree with the guy who says chill out.
Depends on how you define fake. Between the old FA badge and the old Umbro logo we can now definitely ascertain it\'s not the finished kit, however as has been pointed out the FA did their own rebranding in-house with no input from Umbro and none of us know when Umbro took the decision to rebrand in relation to producing prototypes for the England shirt.
Personally I like - bout it would look better without the \'England\' above it.
I\'ve checked out the design on the official site and the tudor roses look as they should with the green and yellow detailing and the lions look so much natural and cooler, almost as they should.
I agree about the England ontop of the crest, it is not needed, but it acts as a compliment to the design. It is head and shoulders above the design in 1998...which was abysmal.
Do you write to the makers of all food you don\'t have a problem with and say thanks I have no complaints? Do you write to Agony Aunts in the paper to say you don\'t have a wife playing away, or problem at work??!!!!
:s
Now there\'s a man with sense. Football\'s going to the dogs and someone\'s being paid to colour things in differently.
But I\'m onto other topics not for this aricle I realise. Maybe the FA should resort to traditional values in ALL they do, not just badges. Get footy out of the gutter.
Rather than \"hey look we have a shiney new image\" I\'d rather hear \"hey we CARE about the game again\".
i could design a better badge.
3 navy blue lions heads ( one big one in the middle and 2 smaller heads behind) each one having a different emotion, glare, roaring and desire, each charactistic lion should describe wht this passionate country is about, the word england or EFA should be in old english caligraphy text with a beaming gold star above, all on a silver sheild, same shape to arsenal\'s...
now THATS A BADGE!

took me 15 mins!

I think for the shirt we are going to see a retro feel(from hints at the Umbro site) with a collared shirt, rather plain, and a red Umbro logo, and possibly a shirt detailed in blue OR red. Also, I think to we will see \"ghost\" image(s) of the crest somewhere on the shirt like in those retched fake shirts that were leaked. The new Ireland kit has this as well on the arm.
