Major League Soccer Philadelphia 2010 was announced as Major League Soccer's sixteenth team on February 28, 2008 by Commissioner Don Garber.

On closing the name-the-team poll on February 6, 2009, the club announced that the official team name, along with team colours and primary word mark, would be unveiled in approximately 30-45 days.

On March 11, press reports indicated that the naming had been delayed until mid-April. It was announced on April 30th that the team name, colours, crest, and ticket prices will be announced at City Hall on May 11th.

The new team name and crest have now leaked to the internet, the club would be called 'Philadelphia Union' with the crest seen here on the right.

Mmm... reminiscent of the old Inter crest.

Apart from the ridiculous amount of presumably meaningless stars, I think its quite nice!

In a football sense yes they\'re meaningless, but there are 13 of them, symbolic of the 13 original states in the Union, ie. the US.

I know this has nothing to do with this, but does anybody know if and when west ham will be having a new home kit. This seasons kit is 2008/09, so i presume that means there will be a new one for 2009/10-11

Nice crest!

But... Why the snake? It\'s a city\'s symbol?

The snake is a reference to Ben Franklin\'s political cartoon \"Join, or Die\" about the Albany Conference a decade or so before the Revolutionary War, when the American Colonists first realized that they were going to have to band together for their own good. The Timber Rattlesnake became a popular symbol for Americans in the nation\'s infancy, appearing on the Gadson Flag and the flag that is currently the Naval Jack of the United States Navy. Nike has even incorporated it into its marketing campaign for the United States men\'s national team, using the \"Don\'t Tread On Me\" slogan from the Gadson Flag and the Naval Jack. As for the 13 stars, I agree they look goofy from a soccer context, but they have significance to the U.S. and our original 13 colonies.

I\'m actually really happy with the colors, as they are slightly darker than those on the Philadelphia flag, and work better for sports teams, generally. While the San Diego Chargers have pulled off the powder blue and sunny yellow look, I don\'t know how well that would translate to a football kit. I think this tarnished gold and light blue will look fantastic, especially if the rumors of an Ajax-style kit with gold-blue-gold are true.

AFAIK, there\'s been no word on a new West Ham home shirt on this site. This season\'s shirt has the SJOBET logo covering up the old XL logo, so it\'s possible that a new shirt may be produced for 09-10 to give their current sponsor a non-makeshift logo. Maybe. Or maybe not.

I hope Philly can support an expansion team...

New clubs\' names and logos can seem a bit contrived sometimes. But good luck to \'em!

I like it, though the outer ring could be done away with. Still, since it incorporates the stars of the original thirteen colonies, pretty cool. I like the historical emphasis, which is what Philly has going for it anyway. Also, the colours could go either way...I\'ll have to see them on the kit.

isn\'t the rattle snake actually a symbole of the Confederation, rather than the union...?

The rattlesnake was used in the Gadsden Flag and the Join or Die slogan of Franklin.

Quite nice actually, glad they didn\'t go for some classic American sports name with no meaning behind it like the Lions or Strikers.

MLS on the rise.

Finally, MLS is starting to understand that adding names with no meaning (See: Real Salt Lake) is stupid. Teams can have unique names. Chicago, New England, Seattle, now Philly. Good stuff.

There\'s something about a classic circular patch that makes me happy. I guess it\'s just cleaner.

I understand the historical connections as mentioned but it still looks like a contrived name and club badge.
Looks like something nike would dream up for a polo neck t-shirt.
MLS teams never seem as \"organic\" as European teams and seem disconnected to their populace.Although it does appear Philly have tried to make a connection.
Philly United might have been a better name.

It\'s a difficult one for the MLS. On the one hand, going with the traditional North American (City, state or province) (nickname) format gets them criticized for not embracing the game\'s traditions, then on the other trying to go down the traditional route gets blasted as too artificial. It can be tough to win sometimes especially when some people are just determined to censoredslap the league no matter what. I think it\'s interesting though that DC United is one of the founding names and has stuck since the very beginning, and in the end diversity is probably good for MLS, if every team was named in the same convention or had the same kit template it would just seem contrived and artificial.

Just as long as no more teams sell their naming rights like the Red Bulls :Pinch:

nice emblem. now all they need is a nice kit and players.

i like it how clubs make their crest according to the city\'s tradition and history and the so called-\"North American\" Tradition of naming sport teams. they don\'t just want their team to be known but also the area where they are located.

I like it, though the outer ring could be done away with.

There is a \"secondary logo\", which consists of the shield with the snake in it, with a scroll beneath the shield with the team motto Jungite aut Perite, Latin for \"Join or Die.:

WOW...everything about the Philly team has thus far turned out better than I ever expected when i heard the proposed names and colors.

BTW...after West Ham goes into insolvency next year and is relegated.....the kit that they go down to the championship will be infamous...so WHO CARES!

Just keep ripping on the US....between us and the Sheiks...eventually we will bail all your teams out!
