 portsmouth new crest

Portsmouth FC unveiled a new crest which differs significantly from the old crest.

It removes the 'three points' and the 'star and moon' now have a three dimentional look. The 'moon' also has more diameter and looks quite like the citys Coat of Arms.

Its the first significant change of the emblem for 15 years. The new-look design is an update of the traditional star and crescent and will be used for the first time in the programme for the club's clash with Fulham on Sunday.

Gone is the Old English- style typeface upon a golden scroll and in comes a bold Portsmouth FC banner across the centre of the shield.

The new design also boasts a three-dimensional effect. Lines have been scored within the crescent moon and striking star.

Slight changes in the shades of the historical symbols ensure the overall effect is that of an emblem reflecting a strong light.

The three tiers of the shield have been significantly played down, creating a simpler, more modern design. The new emblem had been kept closely under wraps by club bosses. But the club unveiled it to the public for the first time.

Despite the new design the familiar 'smiley face' design with the crescent moon on the badge has been kept. The club's crest now Portsmouth's old crestbears a closer resemblance to Portsmouth City Council's own logo. Throughout Pompey's history the club has tried several different designs before reverting to the basic gold star and crescent. In the 1950s and 1960s the traditional crest was emblazoned on the shirt in white rather than gold – believed to have been due to white being a cheaper alternative.

In 1980 the club scrapped the original crest and replaced it with a new design. This crest showed a football on top of an anchor, representing the Royal Navy, and a sword, representing the Army.
Another version included a circular version of the star and crescent crest in place of the football. In 1993 the original crest was reinstated and remains to the present day. The only change since then until today was last year when bosses added 'Since 1898' to the badge underneath the club's name.

Continues the trend that Arsenal began - switching to vector based \"3D\" design. I think that was done to help prevent forging for counterfeit products. Kind of dull.

Yes it\'s of a very Arsenal style.

I like it,expecially after I saw it on the new Pompeys away shirt. It s very simple and clear, and I prefer this narrower half moon

Yep. First thing I thought too. Very similar to the Arsenal design. No wonder they wanted to keep it quiet.

I always said that their crest sucked and that they needed to change it, and not they change it to this? Better to keep the old one because this one sucks big time!

i like it! i think the club have taken a bold step moving forward. not too keen on the new away shirt but the badge is loads better than the banana before with that horrid gothic script lettering. we have to face the facts that clubs are brands and this is going to moving pompey in the right direction off the field.

Seems like the norm is to change club badges; villa, boro and chelsea have done it nicely in the last few years. And to be honest the previous pompey badge wasn\'t very nice and needed a change. However the new one isn\'t tht good and could have been a lot better.
Despite this i think it may look better on a shirt as the picture above isn\'t tht great

I don\'t like the version up here, but if you look at their website its an upgrade. I hated it when i first looked at it but do a side to side with the current and its a lot clearer this works.

This crest has grown on me after first seeing it. It will take the club into the new era..... onwards and upwards!

Also..... People who say its \'very Arsenal\'...hmmm.... Arsenal didn\'t invent the bold looking shield!

Also.... Vector looking 3d design.... so was the last Pompey crest!!! found here:

Thumbs up from me for this new crest!

the crest was not designed by your cousin. it was done by a design agency called The Brand Union. they also did the premier league identity. good work guys

I THINK IT IS A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT ON THE LAST CREST WHICH WAS, I THINK UGLY. WHO CARES IF IT LOOKS A BIT LIKE ARSENALS, WE ARE POMPEY AND THIS IS HOW WE DO IT. GREAT NEW AWAY KIT AND CREST. COME ON YOU BLUES.

Sorry for being so cynical, but I think the main reason clubs are changing crests is to sell more merchandise. Fans won\'t want to wear their sweatshirts, polo shirts and jackets any more if the club badge on it is out of date, therefore the club can sell the same stuff over again with a new badge!
Its bad enough that Pompey exploit their fans by bringing out 3 new kits EVERY season, when most clubs keep a home kit for 2 years. Having said that, I bet I end up buying the new away kit!

Reason they went star n crescent because they know only arabs got money these days, so wanna make da club appeal to arab market, dats why Dr Suliman buy it

When he market da club in arabia, alla da ragheads gonna support pompey because of da star n crescent. No uther reason
