Wales to unveil New Crest

E-mail

new wales crestThe Football Association of Wales are set to unveil a new design of their traditional crest.

FAW chiefs have voted to replace the current Dragon with a new stylised logo as part of attempts to give the organisation a new corporate identity.

The change means the end of the badge that was first established in 1951 – and proudly worn by players in Wales’ only World Cup appearance back in 1958.

Many fans will be disappointed to lose the iconic design, but FAW officials are hoping the crest will represent the start of a new dawn for the game in Wales.

The new badge sees 11 daffodils represent the 11 footballers around the edge of the crest, but sees the Dragon’s head turned to face forward to illustrate the directions the Wales side are taking, and will be introduced this week ahead of the Cardiff City Stadium clash with Bulgaria.

One FAW insider said: “We understand people are attached to the badge as it is, but the feeling was that it is time for a change.

“We have tried to remain faithful to the old design, but are trying to move forward as an association and this is part of that.”

The new logo will not appear on match shirts until the release of a new kit later down the line.

Can't say there was anything wrong with the old crest, but at least this new one isn't too much of a departure.

Did you not read the part of the article right under the picture of the 2 badges where is says "The new logo will not appear on match shirts until the release of a new kit later down the line." Idiot.

I think the point being made is that they clearly knew they were going to change the badge when they brought out the new kit, why didn't they (a) delay the release of the new kit or (b) bring forward the release of the new badge?

Agreed. There are few certainties in this world. But one of them is that Wales will never qualify for a tournament. Their last (and only) time was 1958.

I quite like. It's healthy for corporations to update their logo every now and then, especially when the brand is still easily recognised.

The FAW always has been one big joke.

Our national team is in tatters, the previous manager messed everything up, our best players all pull out with phantom injuries and the old codger FAW councillors who are a bunch of stingy arseholes decide to spend the money they haven't creamed off in their pockets on something that isn't broke.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new badge cost several thousands of pounds to commission, and then there is the process of changing a lot of other stuff to update the logo, which also costs a lot of money. We don't need a new badge, the money should be spent on proper development of the game here, but the FAW are and always have been a bunch of corrupt arseholes who are on the gravy train getting money for old rope and using qualifying trips as jollies.

I like that they just made it more modern, instead of designing something entirely new.
The new crest is pretty cool I think; I especially like the dragon.

nice improvement but you can't just leave out the little elements in yellow (fleur de lys) and the red (heart, are they?)!! it all stands for something, heraldic wise...

I'm a traditionalist that rarely sees the point of messing about with things wot ain't broke, but the new badge is quite smart. I prefer the newer dragon, but the shape of the shield always makes me think of Arsenal.....

And why do the Welsh not use Cymru under the badge instead of the foreign language 'Wales'?

Because no-one would understand it. You wouldn't see Korea or Japan display their country name typface on the crest in their native language. Besides, I think it's a FIFA rule somewhere that it has to be in English if there is any form of typeface outside the crest.

Yeah, the team that play in yellow shirts with green trim, I have no idea who they are. Its got Brasil under the crest, but the team could be anyone.........

Poland, Russia, Croatia, they all have typeface of the countries name in their own language. Why not Wales?

They should just play with just the coat of arms on the shirt, it looks the same as the old crest, without the wording underneath, which could be just placed on the inside of the collar or somewhere else

The reason it's in English is because that's the first language of the vast majority of the population.

Whilst it is true that the vast majority of the population speak English, your username doesn't do you any favours, sounds like ignorance to me.

Besides, even non-Welsh speaking people know the native name for the country is "Cymru". Then again, like I said before, this is the FAW we are talking about!

I don't think such a rule exists.

Brazil for example has their country name in Portuguese under the badge. Yes I know "Brasil" is just the difference of one letter but it is certainly not written in English.

The new identity is OK, but I feel some of the detailing let's it down especially the dragons head and neck which looks like a white hole visually, better if the head was red with white line work over the top. If you want to see how to draw a great looking dragon look at the Brains Badge identity with it's outward looking dragon pose!

They didn't need a new crest just a paint job over the original. A brighter green & yellow & it would of looked brand new.
The new crest isn't too bad, the dragon's head should still be facing the left.

Easily the worst national team in the UK & Eire (and I hate N.I)

If I live another 50 years im pretty sure Wales will never qualify for a tournament, probably time they went the same way as cardifference swanseance and join the English.

Pointless and pathetic team

Tosser. Suggesting we join the Sais is an insult, and for the record, Cardiff and Swansea are both members of the FAW, they just merely play in the English league due to being in existence far longer than the national league.

I know we'll never qualify for a tournament for as long as the old codgers in the ivory towers of the FAW are still around, football in Wales is at a low point all thanks to a load of money for old rope councillors well past their retirement age and John bloody Toshack.

The game needs an absolute overhaul over here. We'll never be big at football, granted, even the most rose-tinted Welsh fan knows that, but we'll be right down there with the likes of Malta, Liechtenstein and Andorra the way things are carrying on.
