Adidas to end Newcastle United kit deal - Puma to take over

E-mail

According to the Sunday Express, Adidas has ended their kit sponsorship deal with Newcastle United. The association with the sportswear company goes back 14 years, but it is believed Adidas have become disillusioned with the negative publicity which has surrounded the club since Ashley took over.

Adidas were quick to distance themselves from stories linking them with Ashley’s controversial plan to re-name St James’ Park, and now they have decided not to renew a contract with Newcastle which ends in the summer.

It's rumored that Newcastle will sign with manufacturer Puma while adidas are on the verge of signing a contract with Spurs, who ironically ending their kit deal with Puma.

Newcastle United wanted the news of adidas’s departure delayed until after Christmas, as kit bought as presents will soon be out of date.

That is interesting.

Let's hope Puma don't ruin the iconic Toon stripes then. I personally would love to see Umbro make a return.

I remember not 10 years ago, Spurs had adidas before switching to Kappa.

I can't see Newcastle in Puma. Nike maybe, umbro would be class, but puma just doesn't suit a team like Newcastle if you ask me.
Tottenham in Adidas would look nice depending on the template that adidas will put out. Personally I like simple designs. I haven't been a fan of some of the kits that Adidas has produced. Namely the Chelsea home kit. For some reason I just don't like it. The chest and the little designs on the front of the kit throw me off.

Hmm i can see where your coming from, but i has to say that umbro wouldnt be a good choice, nike or puma would be the favourites for the take over and it was puma. However, i find this news also interesting, newcastle has been with adidas for such a long time and change at times can be not in everybodys taste, for 14 years they have been with adidas, But i can see puma doing a really nice job with newcastle kits.

As a Spurs supporter I am hopin that it's gonna be fact. IMHO Puma's stuff sucks. Just hate it. Any other brand can only be better, especially Adidas, which for a minute, is making the nicest kits (let's look at French new kit- trully masterpiece). So, I am looking forward that switch.

I am a newcastle fan, and over the past few seasons ive not really liked the aidas kits for newcastle, like the 2009/10 away one and last seasons home one. So i welcome this change, i think puma will make a good job for newcastle.

I think this is just rumours, or a deploy by NUFC to get more money out of an Adidas deal. Adidas have offices inside SJP, and one of the UK's largest stores there aswell. Nuifc strips are also one of the biggest sellers so Adidas deciding to drop out is pretty much hard to believe. Also I would assume Mike Ashley would hand the contract over to Lonsdale or someone else, who Sports Direct actually own, I think he still has a share in Umbro aswell, which is owned by Nike. I would be happier with Nike or Umbro if Adidas do leave. I don't like Puma, they seem to just slap on the Puma logo everywhere, and their templates arn't very good.

We also have to remember that we are coming towards that point of the season where these rumours start coming out.

They could do a template like Reading's homekit. I just can't imagine a Puma away kit for us? What colour? And no Northern Rock so what sponsor??

I don't see the big problem with this would prefer Nike or Umbro to take over but maby Puma would give us a different way to wear the stripes the closest one with a kit to ours if it was made by Puma this season is TPS turku I think they have a really good kit.

Our adidas kits have been lousy since the Bobby Robson kit we wore in the 99 cup final. 10 years of crap kits!! Bring on a change, would be happy with puma or umbro, but thought that nike might be interested due to the sheer volume of kits sold. One note of caution tho, spurs and other puma clubs seem to change their home shirts every season

Personally, although i love the current home top, haven't been a massive fan of any others for years! I love adidas as a brand but think some of their designs lacked originality. Now puma on the other hand has designed some amazing shirts over the last few years, The Italy confeds cup top to name just one.
Although i am gutted that adidas will be leaving, I'm glad that in terms of a company, we're getting the closest thing... (given that their founders are brothers) rather than an american company like nike.

I think puma and a new shirt sponsor will bring the beginning of a whole new era at st james... and I cant wait for it!

as a mackem, id say pumas a good thing, some of their kits are crap.
but forgetting my roots id say umbro or nike,
they both make awesome kits, and although adidas are making some of the best kits around, they just arent doing it for newcastle.
i think an umbro kit would be great, and i know this isnt gonna go down well but, given the stripes, it would be very similar to ours.
i think that our home kit is great , and our away kit, well you either love it or ya hate it, but umbro, as long as they dont do the tailored thing will serve yous well.
oh and the cat thing, yeah so what it might be a black cat, or it might be reverted, put on a black stripe, and then be a whote cat. Problem solved

i forgot to add to my comment that sunderlands away kit is "White, Charcoal Grey and Sulphur" not black and white.
the grey has more of a blue tint to it than a black one

The cat may be white on your kits if you do get Puma but the fact of the matter is a Puma is a black cat! Sorry boys but you will have the mascot on your shirts of that big club down the road, F.T.M!

UMBRO!!! Are you mental, you're all obviously to young to remember their barcode abomination of a strip from he early 90's. And as for the black cats, so what it's a made up nickname that up until the late 90's no-one ever used (despite what deluded mackems will tell you), designed as marketing ploy for all you chumps to vote on to go with a brand new flat pack placca identikit stadium. I mean seriously, sunderland afc has been in existence for over a century and you suddenly think, "hang on we need to decide on a nickname". Heh he pathetic, a bit like you calling yourselves mackems, yet another "traditional" identity that mackems have apparently been using for years.

Can i ask why there are a lot of sunderland fans on here when its news about Newcastle united. Look guys take it for what you want i hope puma do a good job on the new newcastle shirt. lets face it Adidas din't make that many nice shirts for the Toon. P.S as sunderland fans no newcastle will not have a black cat on the shirt cos black cats bring bad luck. Newcastle have had theres. Stick to your own clubs if you can not make a adult opinion.

What's worse us having a black cat on our strips (which will probably be white or blue anyway) or sunderland fans buying Umbro kits and lining Mike Ashley's pockets? people really need to grow up...

Oh and our kits have been terrible post '96 so I'm glad that we're dropping Adidas personally. Would have been awesome if they'd used the old 'trefoil' logo like on Adidas Originals gear however.

TPS Turku top looks like juventus, personally I like puma, less charvers wear it, I'd love to see superdry attempt football gear, puma do better training gear then adidas, cameroons top was superb, a shame it was banned and had to be chopped in half as it wasnt short and top

if the gremlins had there way it would be stone island,

All this news of strip changes is about 2 things - Ashley and Money. Adidas will not supply sports direct with replica newcastle shirts which is a massive money earner, puma will. Therefore Fat Cashley's ditched adidas and now a deal which will see Newcastle shorts selling in his sportsdirect stores up and down the country. Another plan for CASHLEY to make money and nothing to do with anything else. PS Ashley also owns quite a lot of shares in Puma, coincidence i think not
