It is something that has been in the air for a while, but now AIG has officially confirmed it will not be renewing its shirt sponsorship of Manchester United when the deal expires in 2010.

The American company also said in a statement that it was "in active discussions" with Manchester United regarding the current contract which expires in May 2010.

"In line with industry practice, Manchester United is exploring the possibility of a shirt sponsor for the new 2010/11 season," said a United spokesman.

"The club is in dialogue with a select number of top companies worldwide and has so far received sufficient interest to be confident it can improve on its current £19m annual partnership with AIG."

Giant Indian corporation Sahara have already confirmed they are investigating United's proposals, while Saudi Telecom would also be among the companies who could be involved.

Sorry mate, I haven\'t heard of United. I only know of actual football clubs, not massive American corporations. United haven\'t been a football club for years. Just another hype-machine led by people who are billions of pounds in debt.

Liverpool FC: Owned by Americans, in £350m of debt (would have been much more if you were worth anything when you were bought), can\'t afford to pay for new stadium.

Also the first English team to rent the front of their shirts out to sponsors (Hitachi - a Japanese company)

I\'d rather be 350 million pounds in debt than over a billion pounds in debt. But that\'s just me. Maybe you Manc censoreds don\'t mind that.

United and Liverpool are in debt for the exact same reasons - because they were bought on credit-card style loans by Americans who didn\'t have to stake any of their own hard cash into the clubs.

The reason United (who had been debt free before the Glazers) have twice as much debt as Liverpool is because we are worth twice as much. Best stadium in the counrty, best squad in the country, etc.
