Canterbury Europe goes into administration

Canterbury Europe has gone into administration with the loss of 72 jobs in the UK.

Administrators KPMG said the firm had been hit by the culmination of “difficult trading and an "unsuccessful move” into other sports, such as football. The weakening of the pound also added to Canterbury’s problems, as it imports its goods from the Far East.

KPMG said in a statement: “All sponsorship contracts in Canterbury Europe have been terminated as a result of the administration, and the affected clubs will rank as unsecured creditors in relation to any amounts they were owed for the remainder of the contract.”

The European arm of Canterbury employs 86 people, 72 of whom have now been made redundant.

The rest of the Canterbury Group, such as the Canterbury brand founded in New Zealand, is not affected by the administration and continues to trade as usual, although the group is believed to be looking for a buyer or investor.

The firm branched out into football 2 years ago, and recently had sponsorship agreements with: Portsmouth, Preston North End (starting from the 2009-10 season) Mansfield Town, Farnborough, Harrogate Town, Deportivo La Coruña, Lille, AZ and Motherwell

Mansfield Town say they are 'very disappointed' to learn that their kit suppliers Canterbury have fallen into administration.

Stags' new away kit would have been previewed to the travelling fans at Newport this Saturday and against Leicester at home on Tuesday.

Town were also planning to launch the away kit at their forthcoming Open Day on Sunday, 26th July.

The chairman continued: "Our main concern is that our first team have enough kit, followed by replicas for the supporters.

"We will have to act quickly to search for alternatives," he added.

Looks like some potentially nice kits will never see the light of day.
R.I.P Canterbury.

So am i correct in thinking that canterbury will do the kits for this season and then thats it or do the kits for this season need replacing?

Unless clubs have already received their kits they will need to find an alternative supplier. At this late stage that could prove tricky.

yup, thats why deportivo la coruna dropped them. Towards the end of the season the players were having to wear fan replicas. Very unfortunate specially since i like their work. CCC

What a major dissapointment. I feel so sorry for the clubs who have canterbury as their kit supplier because the kits are just so nicely done. take motherwell for example, for years (and i dont mean any disrespect at all) have had not so good kit suppliers in the recent seasons, and now they have canterbury and their kit looked so nice. but now this fart has happened, and now i worry thats motherwell and the other clubs are going to have such an awful kit supplier. well bair in mind the kits of their new suppliers might look good, but even then this is a real hassle...

What a shame, but I\'m glad that the NZ and USA branches are doing alright. Canterbury is one of my favorite companies, even though their casual wear is overpriced.

That won\'t happen until next summer. Motherwell claim Canterbury have already given them sufficient stock for the playing staff for this season. They didn\'t, however, say anything about the replica strips.

Sad for the people who have lost their jobs, but maybe if their kits hadn\'t been such eyesores they\'d have survived.

Terrible about the jobs etc, obviously. But I have to say I was never comfortable with the idea of a brand from *that sport* doing football kit. The sight of them and \'Cotton Traders\' aways sends a chill down my spine.

Just goes to show, they should\'ve stuck to crappy egg-chasing.

Although, as someone who has been made redundant recently, my heart goes out to all those who\'ve lost their jobs.

Be interesting to see which teams (if any) are OK for this season. I mean, it\'s one thing to have stock for the team to wear but that don\'t mean diddly if you don\'t have enough left over to sell as replicas.

So all players, no swapping shirts at the end of the game!

Sad as I\'m a Motherwell fan, but the real losers are those who lost their jobs!

If the company with the copywrite for the kit has gone bust, surely someone can make replicas of it, with a payment to KPMG

As most of the shirts are made in China, maybe the makers will supply the clubs will buy them direct.

Big shame. I really liked some of their kits. I got the Depor away shirt (black with gold trim) reduced at Sports Direct (boo! Mike Ashley) and it\'s one of the nicest, comfiest football shirts I\'ve ever had. Good light material, simple classy collar.

I saw the entire Preston first team squad wearing their gear at Salzburg airport the other day as well. Don\'t know how all the other teams are going to get round this.

CCC ended the relationship with Deportivo, nightmare club to deal with and the comments they made were false,

i\'d have thought most of the stock for this season 0910 will be in ccc\'s warehouse so its just the case of the clubs dealing with the administrator to get hold of it,

therefore clubs wont need to look for a new kit supplier until 10/11 unless they want to see commercial return.

never an issue with quality and premier league teams loved the kit, far better than a lot of so called football specialists!! Just the operational and logisitcs areas that needed improving, simply the company grew too fast,

also people who dont agree with a rugby brand in football, please can anyone remind me of what Nike started off as in the 1960\'s?? Certainly wasnt football!!

Many of these sponsorships NEVER pay for themselves - The clubs have an over-inflated view of their worth, which is further inflated by the ludicrous salaries top level players demand. All over the world various market sectors are adjusting downwards as a result of the global recession. Somehow sports marketing properties think they are immune - well I for one would love to see the entire sector chopped down to size. Give the game back to the fans, lets see affordable tickets, affordable TV subs etc etc. far too much corporate influence.
