Canterbury Europe has gone into administration with the loss of 72 jobs in the UK.
Administrators KPMG said the firm had been hit by the culmination of “difficult trading and an "unsuccessful move” into other sports, such as football. The weakening of the pound also added to Canterbury’s problems, as it imports its goods from the Far East.
KPMG said in a statement: “All sponsorship contracts in Canterbury Europe have been terminated as a result of the administration, and the affected clubs will rank as unsecured creditors in relation to any amounts they were owed for the remainder of the contract.”
The European arm of Canterbury employs 86 people, 72 of whom have now been made redundant.
The rest of the Canterbury Group, such as the Canterbury brand founded in New Zealand, is not affected by the administration and continues to trade as usual, although the group is believed to be looking for a buyer or investor.
The firm branched out into football 2 years ago, and recently had sponsorship agreements with: Portsmouth, Preston North End (starting from the 2009-10 season) Mansfield Town, Farnborough, Harrogate Town, Deportivo La Coruña, Lille, AZ and Motherwell
Mansfield Town say they are 'very disappointed' to learn that their kit suppliers Canterbury have fallen into administration.
Stags' new away kit would have been previewed to the travelling fans at Newport this Saturday and against Leicester at home on Tuesday.
Town were also planning to launch the away kit at their forthcoming Open Day on Sunday, 26th July.
The chairman continued: "Our main concern is that our first team have enough kit, followed by replicas for the supporters.
"We will have to act quickly to search for alternatives," he added.

R.I.P Canterbury.
Unless clubs have already received their kits they will need to find an alternative supplier. At this late stage that could prove tricky.
Please refer to AZ Alkmaar\'s 2009 Quick announcement.
That won\'t happen until next summer. Motherwell claim Canterbury have already given them sufficient stock for the playing staff for this season. They didn\'t, however, say anything about the replica strips.
Although, as someone who has been made redundant recently, my heart goes out to all those who\'ve lost their jobs.
Be interesting to see which teams (if any) are OK for this season. I mean, it\'s one thing to have stock for the team to wear but that don\'t mean diddly if you don\'t have enough left over to sell as replicas.
So all players, no swapping shirts at the end of the game!
Sad as I\'m a Motherwell fan, but the real losers are those who lost their jobs!
Good riddance.
As most of the shirts are made in China, maybe the makers will supply the clubs will buy them direct.
I saw the entire Preston first team squad wearing their gear at Salzburg airport the other day as well. Don\'t know how all the other teams are going to get round this.
our new shirt is unveiled next week so im wondering if its too late and weve already got Canterbury for the season or if we have a new supplier
i\'d have thought most of the stock for this season 0910 will be in ccc\'s warehouse so its just the case of the clubs dealing with the administrator to get hold of it,
therefore clubs wont need to look for a new kit supplier until 10/11 unless they want to see commercial return.
never an issue with quality and premier league teams loved the kit, far better than a lot of so called football specialists!! Just the operational and logisitcs areas that needed improving, simply the company grew too fast,
also people who dont agree with a rugby brand in football, please can anyone remind me of what Nike started off as in the 1960\'s?? Certainly wasnt football!!
