D.C. United signs Volkswagen shirt sponsorship deal

Volkswagen has signed a football shirt sponsorship deal with D.C. United

Volkswagen has signed a football shirt sponsorship deal with D.C. United that will deliver as much as $3.7 million annually to the American football club, making it the second-largest shirt sponsorship deal in league history. The deal is expected to be announced this week, according to the Sports Business Journal, a sister publication of the Washington Business Journal.

The deal also makes Volkswagen the official automotive partner of Major League Soccer for an additional $1 million to $2 million annually. Officials with MLS declined to comment. MLS has been without a major auto sponsor since Honda ended its relationship with the league last year.

It's not official yet, but a D.C. United player was seen Tuesday inside RFK Stadium wearing a team jersey bearing a Volkswagen logo, which could mean the club completed the major sponsorship deal with the German auto manufacturer.

Interesting. Good news for the MLS as well. I still miss the Cosmos though.

This will be great. Little by little the MLS is getting more recognition. VW should look great on the top as well.

mmm, but the blue VW badge in the black, white and red kit won\'t look very nice..
It would look good if the VW badge will be displayed black in the centre of the three horizontal stripes in the front of the shirt.

LOL - obviously they won\'t put it in blue on the shirt. I wouldn\'t be suprised if they do just the white part on the black shirt. I also don\'t think the \"Herbalife\" approach would look bad, and by that I mean that the VW logo goes either before or after \"Volkswagen\" spelled out. Also, like the above, the white stripes have been eliminated. Personally I think it was an attempt at a shirt sponsorship (adidas) before shirt sponsorships were allowed in MLS.

Apparently it\'s going to be a white logo on the home (black) shirt. And a black logo on the away (white) one.
