France announce Nike football kit deal 2011-2018

E-mail

US sportswear giant Nike has won the contract to supply the France international football team from 2011-18 at a cost of 42.6 million euros a year, the French football federation said Friday.

There where some rumours  about it back in November 2007, and today the FFF officially announced a football kit deal with Nike. US sportswear giant Nike has won the contract to supply the France international football team from 2011-18 at a cost of 42.6 million euros a year, the French football federation said Friday.

Nike fought off competition from Adidas, the German sportswear manufacturers who have supplied the team since 1972, and Airness, a smaller French company, to win the bidding process. Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes said money had talked as the proposals by both Nike and Adidas had been very similar in quality.

"It's the financial aspect that made the difference," Escalettes said. "I had neither the moral nor legal capacity to take any other decision."

Escalettes revealed that the seven-and-a-half season contract was worth 320 million euros, a massive four-and-a-half times that of the existing contract.

Nike threw in a seasonal kit donation for all French national teams worth 2.5 million euros a year.

There remain two tournaments in which France will compete wearing Adidas kit, the Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, the latter reliant on the French side ensuring their qualification.

Les Bleus will wear Adidas gear at this year's European Championship and at the 2010 World Cup if it qualifies.

I think that\'s really a mess up... the football is based on tradition and not based on marketing... but, sadly, that is what it\'s being happennig in a while... France is wearing Adidas since 1972 (that\'s tradition) I wouldn\'t imagine Spain waering Nike or Brasil Puma... but I dunno... I guess France will start a new tradition

WHY???? France is fine with Adidas. Well it shows you that it\'s all about the money.

I\'m afraid that sucks . I can\'t imagine a France kit without the traditional 3 stripes . I never imagined that teams like France , Germany or Spain for example will wear nike , but ow adidas say \"IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING\"

To be honest , I\'m a big adidas fan , and I guess that\'s a shame for France to swap adidas with nike , especially after adidas designed such great kits for France along the years and especially after the great kits they made for EURO 2008 .

Shameful. What about the heritage? The classic shirts, the classic teams?

Nike will never produce a shirt as iconic as The France 82 World Cup shirt or the Euro 84 shirt.

FFF, you have sold your very soul, for the sake of a few Euros.

This is a very very sad news for me.
I\'m Italian,but I always loved French shirts.
Nothing is so iconic like the three white stripes on the blue-red field..
It would be less sad if Germany announced Nike deal.
I have several French kit: \'80,\'92,\'94,\'96
French shirt will never be really French without the three stripes.
Like French rugby kits.
I\'ll surely buy 2010 shirt, the last chapter of a great history of style.

However...Nike is really defeating Adidas

I\'m sad too, there\'s clearly a really long time bond between France and adidas, but aren\'t we being to severe with Nike? And what if they surprise us? Anyway, tradition nowadays means nothing, money is everything....but don\'t are we all like this????

this freakin sucks. France and adidas go hand in hand. All the greats of France have worn adidas, Zidane, Platini. There always has to be three stripes on the France jersey.
it wont be the same with nike.

I disagree. Adidas have made some excellent shirts for France, but not any more. The latest one looks like a Powerpoint template. The last one was a mess. Unfortunately, adidas is slavishly imposing its templates on its customers with no apparent regard for their duty to continue and feed the heritage and tradition it has, in some cases, helped to build. Simple fact is that Nike is making better strips these days that allow their teams some individuality.

1st, this fleur is not of French style. 2nd, the fleur de lis still holds mixed connotations (it represented the monarchy which the Revolution was against). Otherwise not too bad...I guess.

It could be a good shirt.
It\'s undoubtful that the nike France shirt will be a great shirt, but anyway I\'ll miss very much
the three stripes.
I agree with Gervillian about the more individuality in nike shirts.
Even if Puma is the worst concerning individuality.

If I was nike I\'ll make a very simple shirt: all blue with a bicolor V collar white and red.

I truly agree with many in the forum that football is about tradition, but the financial aspect is more important. Those extra few millions would enable France to spend on youth development, marketing of football etc. Whatever it is that nike plans for the national team\'s design (I\'m pretty sure it will suck) will never replace our memories of great french players such as Platini, Deschamps, Zidane, Fernandez, Papin, and many others wearing the legendary \"bleu\" adidas jersey.

what saddens me the most is the fact that I\'m sure if every french fan had a vote and a choice in the matter, 99% would stay with adidas. The game we love, it no longer a game, it is all business. Look at the bullshit case in england where they want to play the 39th game abroad. CRap, CRap crap and all down to £.
Sad days ahead.

Funny how everyone is decrying that France have got rid of addias, yet in the UK we\'ve hoped that England\'s umbro deal would get the shoe as they\'ve had the contract too long

I have supported france for awhile now and I knew since Zidane\'s retirement that the classic and legendary France was forever gone. The new logo and now the new sponsors are proving that.

I like the mockup but its not what I\'d like to see the national team in. Plus I can\'t see where the number would go in front.

England should stick with Umbro, since its their own and they\'re pretty decent sometimes. But Le Coq Sportif is ugly...so i guess i\'m a hypocrite in saying that.

Adidas should pick up Italy if anyone now, and hold onto Germany.

I think they could go on with the retro-style kits till 2011, couldn\'t they?

Finally, France got out of Adidas. All Adidas shirts are really bad and always behind of NIKE. Nike gave up Mexico and got France. Pretty good deal. Nike has five huge football countries, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Portugal, and Korea. I LOVE NIKE FOOTBALL SHIRTS, especially the CODE 7 shirts. I can\'t wait \'til France comes out.

what a pity with nike taking on france. Since the days of michel platini, u would just automatically picture france in Adidas.I own 2 france replica shirts and i must admit ,i wont be rushing out to buy the new france one. I actually dont like what nike do with soccer jerseys. Hollands kit looks like a plain golfer with no buttons. France just wont \"look\' the same. Real shame

According to me, since the 90\'s, Adidas shirts are ugly.
I\'m quite happy to see that our national kit will be designed by Nike (which is already doing a great work with our national rugby team by the way...).
Mikie, i love your mock-up (especially the lily flower) but it was the symbol of our royalty and we unfortunately don\'t use it anymore... :o)

I don\'t uisually like Nike, especially their image and their football shoes, but the last few years their jerseys were far ahead of adidas!! That being said I still can\'t imagine \"les Bleus\" without the 3 stripes.

Hey guys ! Vive le foot !! Vive les Bleus !!

I\'ve learned the news much earlier this year so this isnt a surprise. Glad to read that so many are nostalgic to the LEGENDARY partnership between Adidas and FFF. I\'m a fan of Les Bleus since the early 80\'s.

However, seeing how Adidas has treated the French kit designs lately, I don\'t mind they switch brands, specially if the money will serve to develop French football even more. I just really deplore the lack of individuality, as already mentionned above.

Nike could do sthg somewhat interesting, judging by how they treated the Rugby XV FFR design.

Mikie, I saw your design after seeing Jamie\'s suggestions at todosobrecamisetas\'s blogspot, therefore, sorry to say that it doesn\'t look as realistic...Hehe to say the least. But keep going ! Just one thing : since monarchy has been long abolished and most French wont reestablish one any time soon, the lily looks really \"adidas\"...I mean, improbable...Impossible !

we french americans have lost a little piece of the homeland. adidas is and has
.always been THE brand for football. nike is spreading like cancer and should be cut out of the les bleus\' body. better yet, cut out of REAL football all together. It should stay with those rediculous sports they play here in america with over paid athletes and their caveman mentality. i pledge to never spend a single coin on anything nike including this new jersey. a check mark can never replace the beautiful 3 stripes that make the blue white and red of les bleus besides, have you seen the nike sweat shop videos and the children who are forced to make their products? france might have saved a few dollars, but they have lost their face in football tradition. oh well like they say in america, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Rest in glorious peace les bleus you will be sadly missed.

I don't mind to be honest. These new adidas templates are horrible and the only one they ever seem to get right is japan in my opinion. I just hope that England do the same and cut the deal with Umbro because although it is our heritage the new kit is a travesty it looks so cheap. We should go with Umbro's feeder company Nike as well.

I don't know y every1 is making a big deal.. all adidas jerseys look the same.. cookie cutters.. atleast nike has been doing some individual kits and designs for national teams.. in my opinion the 2006 world cup kits from nike were the best.. adidas has been slackin and using the same kits on most of their national teams they only change colors and put different prints.I can't wait to see le bleus with there new kit.. impossible is nothin?---JUST DO IT!!!
