Manchester City Football Club and Nike today announced a new partnership that will see the sponsorship of the Club move from Umbro to the Nike brand from the start of the 2013/14 season.
The Umbro sponsorship, which has been in place since June 2009, will continue to the end of the 2012/13 season, after which all kit, training wear and related products will be designed, manufactured and distributed by Nike. The contract will run until 2019.
“We’re excited by the opportunity to further develop the relationship between City and Nike Inc, which builds on the successful partnership the club has already enjoyed with Umbro, and reflects both the ambitions of the club and the Nike brand’s position within the world of football”, commented Nike Brand President, Charlie Denson.
John MacBeath, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Manchester City Football Club added "We are delighted to have further strengthened our relationship with the Nike family.
"Nike's deserved reputation as the leading global sports brand, its unparalleled R&D capacity, leading global retail distribution networks and award winning marketing capabilities mean that this is a very important step forward in the evolution of Manchester City.”

This is just a business move by Sheikh Mansou and Nike.
Oh, your comment is a week before they did that huge step on the other's head
Addidas own 10 percent of Bayern will never happen
Tottenham puma, going to be Under Armour, Liverpool going to Warrior, Roma Kappa, Napoli Macron not every Big team are Nike or Adidas.
^ Not big
haha
the problem is that big clubs have big ambitions and the Champions League status needs to be backed up by spending. Only Adidas and Nike can offer this level of money in their contracts. I am afraid we will never again see Lotto as the supplier to Juventus.
a more bigger rivarly
Umbro retains its own design team, hence the huge difference in the fit, feel, and style from Nike Shirts.
As a supporter of a Nike-clad club, I'd rather see my team in Umbro, Adidas, or Puma than Nike. Nike kits have a baggy fit, and the designs are not as good as the other manufactures, in my humble opinion.
I'll give you more baggy than Puma and Umbro, but Adidas? Their replica kits are so much more baggy and the material is really bad quality. Nike's replicas are pretty damn mint for the most part.
I've loved a lot of the designs Adidas has put out over the past few years but the quality of the material has just been lacking big time. And that has strayed me from buying their kits.
Oh, wait, Umbro is just a subsidiary company of Nike anyway, so technically all Nike is doing is just cutting out the middle man and the new shirts will be made from plastic bottles and not synthetic poly/cotton.
Well done Nike, you've just made MORE money ... Which let's not forget is the whole point of football anyway ...
Ermmm , not another bitter Gooner ? , it was a sad day in East Manchester M8
Umbro's shirts were fantastic.
This season was a bit odd, but it wasn't terrible. The red and black was fantastic. The dark blue from last season was also brilliant.
With Umbro we have a bit of individuality and style, from a company we had history with, originating from the north west of England.
Even though Nike are Umbros parent company, they're just going to give us mass produced scally clobber, unless City have some say in what they give us.
This was kind of inevitable really. Nike test us out with Umbro gear and see how we go. Once they see we're doing well, they want to get their name in the mix.
Don' t worry, Nike will come out with a miserable imitation of what Umbro have done until now and will try and get away with it... And what' s worse people will buy.
if this also happens with England I' m not going to watch football any more.
I' m really sick of having Nike barging in with a suitcase full of dollars (very useful in football or any other sport nowadays) and "convincing" big clubs on how aesthetically superior they are and what quality material they use...
If the BOD of Umbro at the time approved the acquisition owing to the constant financial difficulties they had to face by having to battle against multisport brands while producing only football products, I really hope a strong British entrepreneur/society will be able to buy them back, make them independent again and tell Nike to censored off.

The United and City thing will be weird, but normally Nike have the bigger clubs, so I can't see United moving to Adidas.
I would expect that maybe Arsenal, Newcastle or Spurs will return to Adidas, especially as they have lost Liverpool, and Chelsea need a overhaul to be amongst the elite again. Maybe, just maybe the National team will move to Adidas, although I hope not. (ie Scotland are Adidas, Celtic Nike and Rangers Umbro.
Nike has a mix of designs - some traditional, some cutting edge - but without the same design focus.
With City on the verge of a potential Premier League win, and maybe a better Champions' League run over the next few years - it's a higher exposure club than it was a few years ago and obviously Nike wants that exposure for the main brand.
This wont be the last team to be taken from the Umbro roster to Nike. Expect other big teams such as LDU Quito, U de Deportes and Colo - Colo in South America being given instead of classy umbro gear, cheap looking nike stuff in a season or two. How long till Bilbao, probably the biggest club left on the umbro roster, to have nike kits in a few seasons? Umbro made two great home kits in the last two seasons, and made an iconic shirt with the change in the Basque colours this season.
But football is about profit these days, and Im pretty sure there is a greater profit margin for a plastic nike shirt than a cotton umbro one. Oh well............
nike gonna dominate one of the biggest football town in the world.Everton moved to nike whilst adidas lost their biggest asset, Liverpool... what kinds of options adidas can take in EPL...
it deosnt seem that puma let newcastle leave...
arsenal maybe, maybe not...
adidas has lots of mid and low level EPL and championship teams but they need globally working clubs...
CAN WE ALL STOP CALLING IT THE EPL WE ARE NOT AMERICA!
It is such a shame that Umbro have played heavily on their Manchester roots and City fitted the bill perfectly; will Utd now fill that role I wonder.
The rumors that England may have the tick on the shirt may well be coming true very soon.
how about looking some higher?
Let's hope Nike can continue their good run of kits. I hope City win the title over United.
Same here, besides the fact that I'm a Gunner fan, sick of seeing a side that is basically there for people from all over the world to support, and is not situated in a part of England where there can be significant fan base for the team. Glory hunting fans team is Old Trafford United (no you are not from Manchester, you're from the Greater Manchester Area)
Now that my rant is over, hopefully with this, Arsenal moves back to Adidas since Chelsea is the only top flight English club that is sponsored by them.
Arsenal moved from Woolwich to Highbury, behave.
So? At least we have fans from the Highbury area, where are Man Utd's fans from Old Trafford? And it's not like Arsenal has the name of a city in their name, while Manchester United represents a city they're not even located in.
Couldn't agree more. I'm a Liverpool fan and I would like Arsenal with nike again. I'm gutted that nike took over umbro with city. Is it just me or are Nike not good partners with umbro? I've never saw respect from nike towards Umbro, it's like they don't own them. I just hope that umbro would end the partnership with nike as I feel that they are not giving umbro any chance, which is a shame because umbro produce some of the most iconic kits and the most comfortable too.

I think Nike just boring.
Nike Manchester Derby!
Good luck to both Man City and Nike.
censored for nike....
great for adidas
