Nike to Sign England kit Deal

It has been reported today that the English FA are very close to agreeing a deal allowing the England national team to wear Nike-made kits.

As Nike currently own Umbro, the FA contract is in effect already with the US sportswear giant, but with the proviso that the Umbro division would be the kit manufacturer.  However, news emerged in May that Nike intended to divest Umbro and this led to speculation over whether the subsidiary would be sold along with the England contact or if the Nike would take over that agreement for themselves.

buy here

The latter now seems far more likely.  The current deal lasts until 2018 but renegotiation would be necessary to allow the Swoosh onto the shirt and the reports state that a new Nike Away kit may be released in Spring 2013, with slight adjustment of the Home kit to remove the double diamond and put the Nike logo in its place.

Umbro and the FA's relationship goes back to 1950 and, with just a short interruption by Admiral, they have produced the England playing wear ever since.  If Nike do take over the contract then it will echo the recent transfer of Manchester City's deal to the parent brand.

Ha, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it just would be something else. If anything it would be an improvement on the stuff Umbro give them. I've never seen a good Umbro Ireland jersey. And before anyone says that stuff about templates, look at the Irish team's jersey at EURO 2012, it's hideous, even if they got a Man Utd style tablecloth jersey, it would still be an improvement on what they have now.

i doubt this will actually happen. Part of the Nike deal to acquire Umbro was thats the FA had a contract with Umbro to produce the England kit, and that said deal would stay intact until 2018. as the FAs deal is with Umbro and not some parent company, Nike should have to vie for the rights just like any other kit deal. Now hopefully by then, Umbro will be in safe hands producing world class kits and not the laughing stock they are now.

Can't say I'm exactly surprised...If Nike can't sell Umbro they'll likely close it down, and much as it would be sad to see the demise of another English sportswear company, I wouldn't be too disappointed - their recent kits have just been naff...it's over fifteen years since Umbro dominated the Premiership with exciting and forward thinking designs, but nowadays they just make glorified polo shirts masquerading as football shirts. Nike should do some good designs, as long as they don't put gingham on the home shirt!

Wow, i mean this comes as a shock, genuinely, due to the English FA being contracted with Umbro since 1984. Like we all obviously know that Umbro was once owned by Nike (thats not the case now i know) but i would of at least thought the EFA would of carried on the Umbro contract due to its English roots. Overall i feel that its a right shame that they're ending there partnership with Umbro, I'm Scottish and i envied those sublime England kits that Umbro designed for the recent seasons.

It doesn't say that at all though. Try reading the article - it is the Umbro deal that was supposed to last until 2018. By then I fear Umbro will have ceased to exist. Nike have done a fabulous job making them hugely unprofitable, taking over or allowing to lapse all their contracts and leaving them as a terrible investment for other owners. They have simply removed a competitor from the market.

Umbro were in that Sports Direct family before Nike bought them. I'm not sure if Sports Direct owned them but Umbro had sold Sports Direct a license which let them make products with their logo on it.

The Umbro kits, pre Nike takeover were pretty rubbish. One template for England and everyone else.

But many other teams have recently switched to Nike, Everton then City next so yeah this is not a surprise. Soon all kits will just be Nike or Adidas and they may even be working a long term plan to do what they do in American sports which is supply the kits for ALL the teams in the league (ex. Adidas for MLS and Nike for NFL)....big shame.

Umbro stopped making good kits when the "Tailored" range came in. The last good England strips were the 05/07 home and 06/08 away. Umbro's recent England kits (multi-coloured St. George's Crosses, etc.) have been a nightmare. I know the Tailored range was Nike's idea, but still. Anyway, Nike has done a brilliant job with France, Netherlands, Portugal, and so on, so I'm excited to see what they come out with for England. Also, their training range will be far superior to Umbro's (jackets, etc.).

Nike has butchered the France kit, the colours aren't even correct anymore. God knows what England will end up with. Glad the DFB kept tradition (adidas) over money (Nike) at least.

I agree.
The sad thing is that England supporters will keep buying the shirts, as will those of MCFC next year.
I think the fans should simply boycot, and keep wearing the old ones they possess instead.
Personally I have not been buying any Inter Milan product for the last 15 years.

Nike should change their advertising slogan to "DON'T DO IT".

This story probably explains why the England away shirt was on sale for about £12 in some stores before Euro 2012 began and the price of the home shirt dropped to around £16 during Euro 2012, despite it being released only a few months earlier.

What ever takes the focus off the football! Good news though... perhaps a change in fortune when it comes to pens!

I remember great umbro kits in early to mid 90s. England, Brazil, Parma, Chelsea, Man U, Intern, Ajax they all had brilliant Umbro kits and bloody american nike took all the good teams in mid 90s. Only PSG was wearing nike in early 90s. Shame cos I really loved umbro kits. I hated that taylored rubbish. cotton like material and so old style and made England all in white. It was ugly and kit should stay modern and keep the tradition white, navy white!!
