North Korea Sign Legea Kit Deal

E-mail

north korea legeaBloomberg reports that North Korea has signed a four year - 4 million-euro Legea kit deal, according to Daniele Nastro, marketing director of Pompeii, Italy-based sports apparel maker Legea.

North Korean football association assistant general secretary Ri Kang Hong confirmed the deal with Legea, without giving financial details.

North Korea received other bids. It declined an offer by China Hongxing Sports Ltd., the Singapore-listed company that provided its jerseys for qualifying games, according to Kelvin Yeung, chief financial officer of the Chinese company.

European brands might have bid more, Yeung said, without saying how much China Hongxing offered. Ri said the agreement with the Quanzhou, China-based company had expired and declined to comment on why it wasn’t renewed.

North Korea rejected Legea’s first design for its shirts as too modern, frowning upon a white line across a red shirt, Nastro said.

“As a people, we don’t like flashy designs,” Ri said. “For home games, the jerseys are white, which we regard as noble, and it reflects our spirit. For away games, we go with red, which is used in our national flag. It also symbolizes our passion and heart. A simple design expresses that more purely.”

Holy cow!! 4-million Euros is a lot of money, especially for North Korea!! I don't know how Legea can recover the money, and I don't know how "valuable" the North Korea brand is to justify paying them 1-million Euro per year. Will the United Nations sanction such business transaction? Very interesting development....

I think it's worth a try for Legea. Providing kits for the World Cup finals is a pretty big deal, especially with Adidas, Nike and Puma all over the place, so they might do some business, even with an underdog team and a simple design.

North Korea is so screwed up, I feel bad for them getting stuck in the group of death though.

This is a fantastic deal for North Korea, but I don't see what Legea get out of it. 4m euro is a massive amount of money for a company the size of Legea and while it gives them the publicity of a team at the WC, I cannot see any possible financial benefit for them.

Looks like Legea have screwed themselves ! What is the point of giving 4 mill Euros how will they get that back. Certainly not in replica sales....

Not sure what is worse living or a despot country run by a nutter or wearing a Legea shirt...a bad day all round really

Well, it seems Legea may want to expand in East Asia.
By sponsoring North Korea, they will get a good coverage of the brand in the World Cup (watched my several millions of people) and possibly in the next Asian Cup.
Don't forget also that wearing a North Korea shirt may be something trendy, especially among the no-global / communists youths in Europe and South America, so I am sure many of them will be willing to buy a shirt instead of the usual Brazil/England/France one...

All the young communists should be sent to North Korea to a labour camp. They can wear their NK shirt there if they want.

Dear ZapZap,

I think you are absolutely right. Puma's policy of sponsoring relatively less important but hype teams is not very different. Honestly I think it might work.

Piss off, Beach Ballinho is 100% on the mark here. I'd take wearing a bad shirt over living in North Korea though. Jong-Il Kim is a retard of the highest order.

So pathetic you chose immaturely to make an ill informed comment about it!
North Korea is run a dictator who is a nutter and the quality of Legea is poor . To re coup the revenue NK will have to sell a hell of a lot of shirts and bearing in mind nobody has much money there, its very unlikely to happen.
When you finish your school exams please feel free to make a more mature and informed comment.

It makes a lot of sense. They will sell a ton of those in North Korea. Probably make up their deal if they sell them for $50 a piece in North Korea alone. I don't think they can but they may spring a surprise on someone. The 2 reasons why are that they are more fit than the other teams because they've been training together for several months now and also because of their cohesiveness as a unit due to that training. I still don't think they will though.

I very much doubt that they will sell many replica shirts in North Korea. The citizens have a state-controlled uniform that has to be worn. The World Cup will only be reported if North Korea win games, so it's likely the majority of the population won't be aware of a World Cup even taking place.

A state controlled uniform? Where do you get your information from because it's so wrong! I've been to North Korea several times and have never seen two civilians dressed the same! Get your facts right please. Don't believe everything you read about North Korea!

its a smart move for 4 million euros considering loads of people will be interested in watching them play just because theyre such a reclusive country and people will want to know who is sponsoring them, shame that 4 mill will go to kim jong il to buy mercedes and whiskey instead of the people that need it!

its a measure of the utter uselessness of political correctness of this world that such a worthless piece of scum like jong il is still allowed to rule a country and step on millions of destitute, starving people every day. noone has the balls to take out a bloody sniper's rifle and blow his freaking head off. any so-called 'anti-globalisation' freak can go to north korea's jong il palace for a day and see if they survive an hour there. freaks!

For anyone that thinks this doesnt make sense from a North Korean point of view. I am willing to bet that the North Korean government will use it as a big propoganda tool, think footage of 1 million+ Koreans in their free full replica kit supporting their football team? Why else would they make so sure that it fits in with communist 'values' and that you cant buy them anywhere!

I think you underestimate the football shirt collectors of the world. This looks a perfectly smart piece of business from Legea. They will recoup most, if not all of their outlay over the next four years from sales outside of North Korea. If anyone thinks they'll recoup a penny from inside N Korea (especially the crank above who thinks N Koreans will be paying $50 dollars a pop!!!) they're deluded.

Legea sponsors only corrupt countries. Iran, Bosnia,NorthKorea, Montenegro and one other african federation. Seems very strange.

I don't think legea will give korea 4 million euros, but will provide kits worth 4 million euros just like they do with Iran.
