E-mail

the fa umbroFA and Umbro agree extension to partnership until 2018.

The FA announced an extension to their partnership with Umbro until 2018, ahead of the start of the team’s 2012 European Championship qualifying campaign.

The agreement, to run until 31 July 2018, represents a significant investment which will be reinvested by The FA back into the game across all levels, from the senior team to grassroots. The Umbro partnership will fund a cross-section of areas key to the development of football in this country including:

•Support of all Club England’s 23 football teams including the men’s national teams, women’s, Futsal, disability and amateur

•St George’s Park, the home of the National Football Centre in Burton-upon-Trent which, in addition to hosting the England senior team, will train and develop a generation of coaches, referees and medical staff every year. New facilities will be housed there for both futsal and partially sighted football

•Free Umbro kit and equipment to 4,000 amateur teams every year to support The FA Chartered Standard Clubs programme

•Investment in 3,000 County FA courses every year which train 60,000 players, referees and coaches annually

•The FA Umbro Fives which encourages participation in the amateur small-sided game by offering thirty-two teams from the 20,000 players involved the chance to play at Wembley Stadium

•Development of Futsal through the National Futsal Championships and the Futsal Youth Festival

•The FA Cup - Umbro are a supporting partner of the world’s most famous club cup competition

•Wembley Stadium - UMBRO are a supporting partner of the home of English football Umbro, which is also a partner of The FA’s 2018 World Cup bid, has a longstanding relationship with England and The FA. They first manufactured England kits back in 1952 and have further shown their commitment through to 2018 with the current contract extension.

Commenting on the agreement, Martin Prothero, Senior Vice President of Football at Umbro said: “We are delighted to announce the extension of our contract with The Football Association. Umbro has been part of English football longer than anyone and it is only natural that we work with The FA to develop the game.

"We are absolutely committed to supporting The FA at all levels of the game, both broad and deep, and we feel now is the right time to show that commitment as we head into a new era for English football.”

Alex Horne, FA General Secretary, added: “We have a fantastic relationship with Umbro that spans almost 60 years. They are part of the fabric of English football and this significant long-term investment into our partnership demonstrates the enduring strength of the England brand.”

Hmmm. So if England get the World Cup in 2018, does that mean they will have to be supplied by adidas?

USA 94 - adidas
France 98 - adidas
Japan '02 - adidas / Nike (although Japan was the original host)
Germany '06 - adidas

You can see the pattern. I wonder if the Brazil/Nike contract will end before 2014...?

adidas is the sponse of the World Cup so the team hosting it always will be adidas, so Brazil probaly would wear adidas in 2014 and so could USA or England in 2018.

Don't be daft.

Italy were sponsored by Diadora in 1990 and South Korea by Nike in 2002.

Any kit sponsor is nothing to do with hosting the World Cup.

The deal runs to the end of July '18 so as the world cup is held in June and early July England will wear umbro wherever the tournament Is held ( if they qualify)

Well yeah. Korea were supplied by Nike prior to the World Cup in 2002, but Japan were the original hosts and they switched from Asics to adidas. Korea came in as co-hosts later.

Since 1970 when adidas supplied the matchball, all host nations wore adidas kit with the exception of Italy, bearing in mind that the Italian kit was no trim or even supplier motifs, probably why adidas omitted from supplying them in 1990 but in 1990, with the exception of Italy, Austria, Uruguay, Spain, Costa Rica, England, Korea and Scotland ALL teams wore adidas kit.

1974 - Germany - adidas (although there were some rumours that Erima supplied the match kits and adidas everything else...)
1978 - Argentina - adidas
1982 - Spain - adidas
1986 - Mexico - adidas
1990 - Italy - Diadora
1994 - USA - adidas
1998 - France - adidas
2002 - Japan - adidas (Korea - Nike)
2006 - Germany - adidas
2010 - S. Africa - adidas.

The UEFA Euro tournaments have been more varied although adidas supplied the matchball.

I cannot see England dropping Umbro but if they want the World Cup that bad, then adidas and FIFA may have to force them to wear adidas kit from 2018 then go back to Umbro after. I don't know, that's my theory. We will have to see what Brazil wear in 2014 I guess.

I'm quite prepared to believe that adidas were major players in FIFA, and had a lot of influence in World Cups, but if the kit sponsor was such an important factor in deciding the host nation, why would England remain with Umbro?

In the 70s and 80s most nations had an adidas kit anyway, and host nations USA, France and Germany had been adidas nations for years before they bid.

As for Japan, I'm sure adidas stepped in to outbid Asics when they knew they were hosting the World Cup.

I don't think there's any great adidas conspiracy theory.

Wtf? We all know Nike is American but that doesn't mean all Nike shirts are americanized. Look at all Nike kits do you see an outrageous design with a cartoony version of the clubs name on the front? No. In fact many complimented/complained about Nike being too simple and clean. Stop this prejudice about adidas being German or Nike being American: both can make good kits that doesn't mean that because umbro is British it can only be for the FA. That kind of attitude is what brought us down down during the wc.

yes i will not doubt that but umbro being british mean we are almost guarenteed a decent kit whereas the germans and american could not but since umbro is owned by nike i will just say ok whatever

but umbro sucks. okay its not a cheap brand like jako or saller but teams who consider themselves world class teams should wear better brands. umbro is ok for kasakhstan, azerbaijan, northern ireland and teams like that. even norway, ireland and sweden are too good for umbro

The quality of the team has nothing to do with the brand.

It's all about who is the brand that gives the most money to the FA.

Brazil used to have Umbro in 1994 and even India has Nike.

There's a couple of dolts on here. Umbro will be sponsoring England through WC 2018, it says so in the bloody article. Like Umbro/Nike are suddenly not going to sponsor them even though they say they will till the above date. Duhhh......

"The agreement, to run until 31 July 2018"
