This seems to be the new Sunderland away shirt for the 08/09 season made by Umbro. This is a leaked picture and it will take a while until the official kit launch later this year. The new 2008/09 home kit is already officially revealed.
The all-white change kit will become next season's third-choice outfit, with a re-designed away kit being released during the close season. This Image purporting to be the new away kit has already appeared all over the internet showing the shirt made up of dark blue and lighter blue stripes with dark blue shoulders, not too dissimilar from a design used by the club five or six years ago.
Sunderland's current third kit has not been seen yet in a competitive game, and we understand it is unlikely to be used at all!
Clubs have to get Premier League permission before using a third kit in games.
If the league considers that a colour clash can be averted by use of the main home kit or away kit, or a combination of both, clubs are blocked from using their third kit.
Sunderland have asked at least twice this season to use the all-blue third kit, but have been told they could not.
The only game the third kit – advertised as a limited edition when it went on sale – has been used in during the season was the Andy Lawrie testimonial at Falkirk in November. It was unveiled for the friendly in Galway last summer.
