Brentford announce CRY Charity sponsorship

The new Brentford 2008/09 Puma Away Kit was officially launched at Griffin Park. Brentford have followed in the footsteps of Aston Villa and Hampton & Richmond Borough by giving over kit sponsorship to charity.

The secondary sponsors' patch on their new away kit, launched on Friday and to be worn for the first time at Swansea tomorrow, will be donated to the national heart charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

CRY's logo will appear on the back of the shirts forthcoming season.

Brentford already have good links with the charity as manager Andy Scott is one of their patrons.

Former Bees striker Scott had to retire early from playing after suffering a life-threatening heart disorder called hypertrophic cardiomypathy while playing for Leyton Orient.

Scott said: "I'm very grateful to Brentford FC for the opportunity given of linking up with a charity that is very close to me personally.

"I hope that the subsequent awareness regarding CRY benefits not only those involved with Brentford FC, but also the profile of the charity around the country.

"I also hope that the idea catches on and that clubs around the country can use this partnership as a template to build relationships with their own local charities."

CRY founder and chief executive, Alison Cox MBE, thanked Scott for his support.

She added: "Andy is a tremendous role model for the charity as, having been diagnosed himself, he now dedicates much of his free time to campaigning vigorously for young people to have the opportunity to be screened.

"Having felt unwell during a match, Andy was referred to CRY's cardiologist Dr Sanjay Sharma, who diagnosed a potentially fatal heart condition and advised him that he should stop his football playing career immediately.

"Andy's work for CRY, his new role with Brentford and our subsequent partnership with the club will undoubtedly help to save young lives."
