New Singapore 08/09 Nike football kits launched

The new Singapore team kit incorporates latest innovation and technology to better equip the team as they tackle their competition in World Cup qualifiers.

Nike, together with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), unveiled the new national team kit for Singapore Lions today. The new team kit will be worn by the national senior team for the friendly match against Australia on 22 March 2008 and thereafter at the World Cup qualifiers match against Lebanon on 26 March 2008 at the National Stadium.

FAS President Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee says, “I’m proud to say that since the start of our partnership with Nike last year, our Lions have gone from strength to strength and won yet another Asean Football Championships. With the launch of the new national team kit, they are better equipped to face their biggest challenge as they play in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers. We belive that the new team kit will reinforce our Lions’ pride and identity and helps set them up for success.

The new Singapore national team kit, specially developed in close tandem between Nike global design team and the FAS, took more than six months to complete. The design team had specially formulated two colour palettes: Atom Red and Marina Blue, as key colours for the home and away jerseys.

The home kit in Atom Red is a reflection of Singapore’s national colour that stands for universal brotherhood and equality of men, and is also a multi-racial symbol of Luck and Courage. The away kit in Marina Blue is throwback to the historic jerseys of the past, reminding the team players of how far they have progressed through the years. The special Marina Blue colour also reflects Singapore’s identity as an island city surrounded by tranquil waters.

The Singapore flag is placed on the left, close to the heart, representing the national honour and respect that each player has for the country. A stylized lion head logo has also been specially created to be placed on the back inner collar of the jersey. Symbolizing courage, strength and power, the logo echoes the fighting sprit and resilience of the national team in the face of challenges.

17-year old midfielder Hariss Harun says, “I am very proud to wear this new jersey and play for my country. It gives us a sense of identity and propels us to play better on the pitch. I believe that our Singapore football fans will be able to connect with this identity and support us in our upcoming matches at the World Cup Qualifiers!”

Football fans can purchase replica supporters’ team kits from Nike retail outlets. The replica kits, priced at S99, are fabricated with Nike FIT DRY Technology and are slightly modified to provide a comfortable fit for supporters. The team kits are available at Nike by B.I.R.D stores located at Suntec City Mall, Vivocity and Cineleisure. They can also be purchased at Weston Corporation stores located at Peninsula and Queensway Shopping Centers.
