Today April 3rd 2007 around 100 rare football shirts go under the hammer at Christie's auction house. One of them is a shirt worn by Arsenal Captain Joe Mercer in the 1950 F.A.Cup Final.
In this match played on 29th April 1950 at Wembley Arsenal defeated Liverpool 2-0 and is estimated at GBP 5,000 - 8,000
Another great shirt was worn by Alan Ball in the 1972 Centenary F.A.Cup Final. In the match played on 6th May 1972 at Wembley Leeds United defeated Arsenal 1-0 and is estimated at GBP 1,200 - 1,800.
My personal favourite is the one worn by Kenny Dalglish in the the Glasgow F.A. Select v. The Football League, Glasgow Jubilee Appeal match.
The match was played to commemorate the Queen's 1977 Silver Jubilee. In the match played on 17th May at Hampden Park, the Glasgow F.A. Select defeated The Football League 2-1, with goals from Sandy Jardine (pen) and Kenny Dalglish. The colours of the shirt represents the five Glasgow based football teams, Celtic, Rangers, Partick Thistle, Clyde and Queen's Park .The list goes on and on.. . Must be great working at Christie's

FIFA ruled that no country, other than the holders and hosts could reach the finals stages without playing a match. Consequently, the runners-up from all the other groups were invited to take part in a draw to see who played Israel in a two-match play-off. Wales were drawn and in the first match played on 15th January 1958 at Tel Aviv, Wales won 2-0. In the return match played on 5th February at Ninian Park, Wales once again won 2-0, sending them through to the 1958 World Cup finals.
