Coventry City reached their first ever FA Cup Final in 1987. For a team that had spent decades in the top flight it was a long time coming. Up against seasoned cup specialists Tottenham, they were going to have their work cut out.
It was one of the most open and exhilarating finals for many a year.
It was 2-1 to Tottenham when Coventry’s Keith Houchen and Cyrille Regis broke, and the ball was fed out to David Bennett on the right wing who whipped in a cross. Houchen launched himself speculatively and spectacularly to equalise with a low diving header.
The match went into extra time where it was decided in the cruellest of manners, with Tottenham’s
Gary Mabbutt scoring an own goal. The cup was bound for Highfield Road for the first time.
