The first semi-final to take place in 1966 was that between England and Portugal. This match in contrast to the second semi-final turned out to be an exciting game. Bobby Charlton upstaged Eusebio with what many believe was his finest ever game for England and he even received congratulatory handshakes from the Portuguese after his spectacular second goal. The most poignant image of this game was Eusebio’s tears as he left the pitch heartbroken in defeat.

Footnote:
Kenny Morgans, one of the Busby Babes, born Swansea March 16th 1939, had just broken into the team, and at the age of 18 was already staking his claim to be first choice for the coveted number 7 shirt after making his debut against Leicester on 21st December, he then put in some excellent performances and unexpectedly ousted Johnny Berry from the right wing position. He played in the European Cup at Old Trafford on January 14th against Red Star Belgrade and again on 5th February 1958 in the away fixture. He survived the tragic air disaster at Munich on 6th February and went on to play in both semi-final games against AC Milan. The air crash left its mark on this likable 19 year old Welsh lad, who could not fulfil his early promise when he looked set to be a firm favourite for many years to come and secure a regular place in the team. He made a total of only 21 games for United four being in the European Cup 1958.
