What is a Pre-Match Football Shirt?

A pre-match football shirt is a technical garment worn by players during the warm-up period immediately before a match, forming part of a club’s wider training and matchday apparel. It is typically made from lightweight polyester fabrics engineered for basic breathability and moisture management.

In contrast to match jerseys, which are restricted by tradition or league regulations, pre-match shirts often feature vibrant patterns, graphics, club-themed, cultural, and experimental designs. Club crests, manufacturer logos, and sponsor elements are usually applied using heat-transfer and sublimation methods to maintain a flexible construction.

Dedicated pre-match shirts were already in use by the 2010/11 season, with the category becoming more prominent in the late 2010s as clubs and manufacturers expanded warm-up apparel into a distinct retail product. This also aligned with advances in sublimation and heat application technologies, enabling garments to be produced more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Clubs and manufacturers such as adidas, Nike, Puma, hummel and Umbro began to introduce separate designs to complement seasonal kit releases, providing an additional platform for visual variation and revenue without altering official match shirts.

Today, pre-match football shirts, or pre-match soccer jerseys, are used consistently across professional football and worn during on-pitch warm-ups before competitive fixtures. They are also released as part of official match collections, where they function as training wear, lifestyle appeal and casual clothing. They are commonly referred to as warm-up tops, training jerseys, or warm-up kits, and are typically released as a single retail version for both players and supporters.
