Blackburn Rovers have released their 150th anniversary shirt to commemorate the club’s founding in 1875. The limited edition release by Macron marks a significant milestone in the history of the Lancashire club and references one of the earliest recorded decisions that shaped its visual identity.
At a meeting held on 15 November 1875, it was formally agreed that a Maltese cross would be worn on the left chest in blue. That instruction is reproduced on the Blackburn anniversary shirt, with the Maltese cross applied to the left chest as the central identifying feature. The rest of the shirt is presented in white and features a traditional long sleeve construction, buttoned placket and plain body, reflecting early football garments.
The Blackburn Rovers anniversary shirt was photographed at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn, a location closely connected to the club’s early years. One of Blackburn Rovers’ founding members, J T Syckelmoore, taught at the school and is believed to have introduced several pupils to the club during its formative period. The imagery also references an archived team photograph from the 1883/84 season, linking the modern shirt to one of the earliest visual records of the club.
Produced by Macron, the shirt includes a woven 150th anniversary detail positioned near the hem, confirming its commemorative status. The standard release is accompanied by a collector’s edition, limited to 500 individually numbered units. These boxed shirts feature unique numbering applied to the hip tag and are reserved exclusively for season ticket holders.
