New Zealand will wear a special edition shirt when they meet Australia in the Soccer Ashes, inspired by the one worn during New Zealand’s FIFA World Cup debut in 1982.
The Puma shirt, first released as a retro edition in March alongside the FIFA World Cup Oceania Qualifiers, was met with strong demand and sold out quickly through the New Zealand Football store. It has now returned, this time to be worn on the pitch for the trans-Tasman clash.
Created in partnership with the German manufacturer and New Zealand Football, the jersey carries a fine pinstripe pattern with black trim on the collar, sleeves and cuffs. The silver fern crest sits on the left chest, opposite the brand logo, with the word ‘Aotearoa’ positioned below the back collar.
The Soccer Ashes is a football trophy contested between Australia and New Zealand. First played for from the 1920s to the 1950s, the trophy was later lost before being rediscovered in 2023, with the rivalry revived in London that October.
The All Whites face the Socceroos in a two-leg home-and-away series for the Soccer Ashes trophy – first at Canberra’s GIO Stadium on Friday 5 September, followed by a homecoming match at Go Media Stadium in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on Tuesday 9 September.
